PINEHURST, N.C. (EMUEagles.com) -- Blustery conditions surrounded round one of the 2011 Pinehurst Intercollegiate Friday, March 11, at The Golf Club at Pinehurst No. 6. Mild temperatures forecasted did not materialize, and all 16 teams participating felt the effects of the weather.
However, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf fought through the elements to record a seven-over 291 to hold down the top-spot on the leaderboard entering day two. The Eagles hold a two-stroke edge over Michigan State University and Penn State University who finished at 293. The University of Richmond was fourth with a 295, with Virginia Tech, UNC Greensboro and Virginia Commonwealth all tied for fifth after a round of 297
Individually, Brian Churchill-Smith also leads the individual pack, scoring a stellar two-under par 69. One shot behind Churchill-Smith was Andy Knox of UNC Greensboro, Mikey Moyers of Virginia Tech, Sam Wall of Old Dominion and T.J. Howe of Penn State in a four-way tie for second.
Casey Olsen is tied for 10th with a 72 while Nick Carbary posting a 73 for 19th place. Rounding out the lineup, Jared Dalga and Brad Altenhoff shot a 77 and a 79, respectively.
Competition is extremely tight, with 32 of the 93 participating players being separated by only a five shot spread.
Round two begins at 9:00 AM Saturday. Admission is free and spectators are welcome. Results and live scoring are available on www.GolfStat.com, and results plus next day pairings are posted at www.pinehurst.com.
