COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University baseball team overcame an early four-run deficit and staved off a pair of late rallies before Brent Ohrman's (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) RBI single in the 11th inning proved to be the game-winner for the Eagles, who defeated Tennessee Tech, 9-8, en route to the series win at Bush Stadium, Sunday, Feb. 27.
Ohrman went 3-for-5 on the afternoon with three RBI and a run scored as the Eagles improved to 3-4 on the season with the win and Tennessee Tech fell to 1-6 with the loss.
EMU starting pitcher Neil Butara (Euclid, Ohio-St. Ignatius) lasted just 2.1 innings, but three more Eagle hurlers picked him up, including Joe Battistelli (Allen Park, Mich.-Allen Park), who came in relief to earn his first victory of the season and move to 1-1. Meanwhile, TTU – which also used four pitchers – saw Cullen Park suffer his first defeat of the year in relief of starter Nick Price, who allowed EMU to tie the game at 5-5 before leaving after six innings.
Butara ran into trouble early, giving up four first inning runs to the Golden Eagles, all coming on hits in succession. A leadoff single started the inning, followed by an RBI double and then a run-scoring single to make it 2-0. The advantageous start was then capped off with a two-run homer by Zack Stephens, his second long ball of the series.
EMU got two runs back in the second inning when Robert Wendzicki (Brook Park, Mich.-Midpark) cranked his second homerun of the season, a two-run shot that scored Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley), who reached base on a walk earlier.
The TTU third started with a leadoff double by Stephens. Butara would get the next batter to line out to center before senior right-hander Corey Chaffins (New London, Ohio-New London) relieved him on the mound. Later in the frame, Chad Hayes singled home Stephens to spot the hosts a 5-2 lead after three innings.
Chad Oberacker relieved Price on the hill to start the fourth and it was exactly what the Eagles needed to get back in the game. Daniel Russell (Grandville, Mich.-Grandville) led off the inning with a double to left. Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing CC) then followed with a single to put two on base with none out.
After a Leonard flyout that moved Russell to third, Wendzicki grounded out to second, but still managed to get the run home to make it 5-3. Lee Longo made his first start of the season and delivered with an RBI single up the middle to pull the Eagles to within a run. Matt Hitt (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers-Kishwaukee CC) stepped up and kept the rally going by doubling home Longo to tie the game at five-apiece.
Chaffins would retire five of the next six batters on his way to firing 4.2 shutout innings while allowing just two hits. The Eagles put Chaffins in line for the win with a two-run seventh inning started by another Longo base hit. With two outs in the inning and runners at second and third, Ohrman came up in the clutch and scorched a double to center scoring both runners and gave EMU a 7-5 lead.
Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg) came in to pitch the eighth and ninth innings. He got out of the eighth unscathed before running into trouble in the ninth. With two outs and runners at second and third, Stephens came up and delivered another blow, a two-run single to tie the game at 7-all and send it to extra innings. Stephens would finish the game 3-for-6 with four RBI and two runs scored.
The Eagles responded in the 10th after Ohrman tripled to deep right. The next batter, Russell, then singled him home to give EMU the slim lead. However, TTU would answer back. After Dimmerling hit Zach Flynn to open the frame, a flyout and a groundout moved him all the way to third base with two outs. Battistelli then came in to pitch for the Eagles and looked to have gotten Austin Wulf to ground out to first to end the game, but Wendzicki couldn't pick it clean and the game continued, 8-8, into the 11th.
Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-West Milton) doubled to lead off the 11th for the Eagles and Ohrman eventually drove him home to provide the game-winning run.
EMU manufactured the victory despite being out-hit 14-11 in the contest while making three defensive miscues to TTU's zero.
EMU treks to Clinton, S.C. to take on Presbyterian College in a two-game set March 1-2. Each game is scheduled for 2 p.m. eastern time.
