CLINTON, S.C. (EMUEagles.com) – Seven Eagles record multi-hit games as the Eastern Michigan University baseball team extended its winning streak to three games, taking the first of a two-game set against Presbyterian College, 13-6, at the PC Baseball Complex, Tuesday, March 1.
EMU has been no stranger to coming from behind in games this season as they have not led from wire-to-wire in any game this year. Today was no different as the Eagles overcame a three-run first inning deficit to defeat the Blue Hose and even their record at 4-4 on the season. Meanwhile, PC drops to 4-4 on the year.
EMU scored five runs in the second inning to spark the comeback victory and Tim Combs (Dayton, Ohio-Dayton) pitched in five solid innings in relief to pick up his first win of the year.
EMU starter Brian Valente (Macomb, Mich.-Eisenhower-Saginaw Valley State) struggled in his first collegiate start with the Eagles as he gave up back-to-back homeruns to Brad Zebedis and Kenny Bryant to spot Presbyterian with a 3-0 first inning lead.
With one out in the second, Senior Zack Leonard (Canton, Ohio-McKinley) sparked the EMU comeback with a double to left field, eventually scoring on Robert Wendzicki's (Brook Park, Ohio-Midpark) RBI single up the middle. Lee Longo (Mayfield, Ohio-Mayfield) then drove him home with an RBI double of his own.
After Matt Hitt (Fishers, Ind.-Fishers-Kishwaukee College) reached on a hit by pitch, Ken Battiston (West Milton, Ohio-Milton Union) doubled home Longo to tie the game and Hitt later scored on a passed ball to make it 4-3, Eagles. Tucker Rubino (Scottsdale, Ariz.-Horizon-Glendale CC) gave EMU a 5-3 advantage with a sacrifice fly to center to score Battiston.
The Blue Hose would load the bases with one out in the bottom of the second after the Eagles failed to turn a double play to end the frame. Gabe Grammer's RBI groundout tightened the score to 5-4, Eagles.
Combs then came in to get the final out in the second and would go on to retire the first four batters he faced. The senior would get added run support as the Eagles tacked on a run in each the fourth and fifth innings via RBI groundouts to make it 7-4.
EMU would score two runs in each of the final three innings to put the game out of reach.
Rubino, Battiston, Longo and Brent Ohrman (Adrian, Mich.-Adrian) all turned in two hits on the day with at least a run scored and an RBI. Leonard led the team with a three-hit performance, going 3-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base. Also tallying two hits were Wendzicki and Ben Magsig (Okemos, Mich.-Okemos-Lansing CC).
The Blue Hose would cut the deficit to 9-6 in the bottom of the seventh with a run-scoring single by Andrew Williams preceded by another RBI groundout, but the Eagles proved too much to overcome.
EMU out-hit Presbyterian, 16-11, and Taylor Dimmerling (Perrysburg, Ohio-Perrysburg), Sam Ott (Canton, Mich.-Salem) and Kyle Peterson (Chandler, Ariz.-Hamilton-Chandler-Gilbert CC) combined to throw the final 2.1 innings scoreless to close out the game.
The Eagles and Blue Hose will wrap up the two-game set at the PC Baseball Complex tomorrow at 2 p.m. Tomorrow's pitching matchup will feature EMU junior right-hander Jordan Glover (Toronto, Ont.-Ontario Schools) against PC left-hander Steven Richardson.
