Eagles Tied for Fifth After Day One of MAC Championships

Women's swimming and diving team tied for fifth with 54 points after one day of action

ATHENS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)—The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team currently sits tied for fifth place after kicking off the 2011 Mid-American Conference Swimming and Diving Championships today, Feb. 23, at the Ohio University Aquatics Center in Athens, Ohio.
The quartet of Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow), Chelsea Allard (Walnut Creek, Calif.-Lake Forest (Ill.)), Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) and Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) raced to a fourth place, 1:42.54 finish in the 200 Medley Relay to open the first session of the championships. Their efforts mark the fastest time for EMU in that event this season.
In the 800 Freestyle Relay, Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge), Tracy Morgan (Strongsville, Ohio-Strongsville), Elisa Torres (Antioch, Calif.-Deer Valley), and Helena Tolic (Zagreb, Croatia-Sportska Gimnazija) took seventh place as they combined for a 7:40.67 performance in the event.
At the conclusion of first-day action, Miami leads the way with 72 points followed by Ohio with 66 points. Buffalo sits in third with 60, while Bowling Green is in fourth place with 56. Akron and EMU are tied at fifth after both squads tallied 54 points, and Ball State (48) and Toledo (40) sit in seventh and eighth place, respectively.
The Eagles will return to action tomorrow for day two of the championships. Thursday's schedule will include preliminaries for the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle and one-meter diving. The second session will feature finals for those events as well as the 200 freestyle relay. Events are slated to begin at 11 a.m.
