Women's Swimming and Diving Set for 2011 MAC Championships

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team will be traveling to Athens, Ohio for the 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships scheduled for Feb. 23-26. The Eagles have hopes of improving upon its fourth place finish from last season and are aiming for their third overall title in school history.
ATTACK ON THE MAC: The 2011 Mid-American Conference Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will mark the 30th appearance by the Eagles in program history. EMU has won two MAC Championships in school history after taking back-to-back titles in both 2006 and 2007. Last year, the Green and White accumulated 453.5 points to take fourth at the championships and placed four on the All-MAC squads. Samantha Partridge (Carmel, Ind.-Carmel) and Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) were named to the All-MAC First Team, while Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge) and Danielle Hulvey (Pickerington, Ohio-Pickerington Central) earned second team honors. Head Diving Coach, Buck Smith, was also named Diving Coach of the Year for the fifth time in his career.
IN THE RANKS: Several members of the Eastern Michigan University's women's swimming and diving team own top-five marks in the Mid-American Conference this season. Briana Emig has posted a slew of top-five performances in the MAC throughout her sophomore campaign, including the fastest time in the 500 freestyle in 4:49.75 for a Division I consideration mark. She is also second in the 1,650 freestyle (16:22.03), and fourth in both the 1,000 free (10:10.05) and the 400 IM (4:24.53). Senior Sarah Kowalski has the fifth fastest times in three events, including the 50 freestyle (23.60), the 100 freestyle (51.36), and the 200 freestyle (1:51.60). Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow) and Tracy Morgan (Strongsville, Ohio-Strongsville) each recorded fifth place marks in the 100 backstroke (56.00) and the 200 backstroke (2:02.70), respectively, while Elisa Torres (Anitoch, Calif.-Deer Valley) captured a 2:03.26, fifth-best time in the 200 butterfly and Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) has the third best performance in the 200 IM (2:03.95). Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forrest Hills Central) has been dominant on the boards for the Eagles this year and also holds the top score of 333.83 in the three meter event. She also tallied the second highest performance in the one meter at 314.62. Both marks qualify her for NCAA Zone Championships.
LAST TIME OUT: The women's squad returns to action after taking time off to prepare for the upcoming MAC Championships on Feb. 23 in Athens, Ohio. The Eagles last competed on Jan. 28 when they hosted Xavier in Jones Natatorium for a non-conference tilt. EMU bested the Musketeers, 123.5-85.5, on senior night, taking 10 of 13 events in a dominant victory.
BUCK SMITH HONORED WITH AWARD: Eastern Michigan University men's and women's diving coach, Buck Smith, has been selected as the recipient of the Bruce Harlan Award for 2010. The honor is the highest award given by the Michigan Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association (MISCA) for continued leadership, contributions, and dedicated service to Michigan High School Diving.To be considered for this award, a person must have coached interscholastic diving for at least five years in Michigan with above average success, and have demonstrated leadership at the Local, State, and National levels. The dedication and hard work put forth by Coach Smith has been an inspiration to fellow colleagues within diving and MISCA.
