Calka Earns USTFCCCA All-Academic Honors

NEW ORLEANS, La. (EMUEagles.com) — Sophomore Courtney Calka (Livonia, Mich.-Stevenson) of the Eastern Michigan University women's cross country team was named to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association 2010 Division I Cross Country All-Academic team announced the organization today, Feb. 15.
A total of 99 student-athletes representing 62 institutions are featured on the list. Syracuse led all teams with five All-Academic nods while Florida State followed with four. Among all conferences, the Big East picked 16 plaudits while the Big 12 was next in line with 15.
Six of the top ten finishers at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships earned All-Academic status, including Reid, Jordan Hasay (Oregon), Risper Kimaiyo (UTEP), Lucy Van Dalen (Stony Brook), Holly Van Dalen (Stony Brook), and Amanda Marino (Villanova). In addition, six of nine NCAA Regional Champions from the 2010 season earned All-Academic standing.
Calka led the Eagles throughout the 2010 campaign. A perfect 4.0 major in exercise science, the Livonia, Mich. native paced the Eagles in each of her seven meets this season including three first-place finishes. She was an All-MAC selection after finishing fifth overall at the MAC Championships with her time of 21:03. The sophomore was also named to the All-Region team after a 21:22.79, 21st-place performance at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional this season.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region's top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2010.
