Detroit, Mich. native earns the honor for the fourth time in her career

CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University senior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball West Division Player of the Week, the conference office announced today, Dec. 12. It marks the fourth time she has won the award in her career.

James had another strong week in leading the Eagles to a 1-1 week. In two games, she averaged 28.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 40.5 minutes per game. In the 13-point victory over Michigan, Dec. 11, James broke the EMU women's career scoring record with a 38-point effort to give her 1,935 points. James passed former EMU guard Laurie Byrd (1978-82) who scored 1,899 in her illustrious Hall of Fame career.

Against the Wolverines, she was 10-of-21 from the field to go along with 13-for-14 from the free throw line.  Over the first 10 minutes of game, James had scored 19 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 4-of-6 from three-point range. All of this came off a contest against UMKC in which she scored a team-best 19 points.

Individually, James is second in the nation in scoring with an average of 25.1 points per game.

Currently ranked 13th all-time in points in MAC history, James has reached double figures in points on 88 occasions in her career. The Detroit, Mich. native has scored 20 or more in 39 of those contests. Her career average of 18.3 points per game is fourth-best in MAC annals, while she ranks in the top 20 in the conference record book in three-pointers attempted (784), field goals attempted (1,733), three-pointers made (240) and field goals made (680).

Final exams will be complete and the holiday season in full swing when the EMU women's basketball team returns to the court Tuesday, Dec. 20, for a non-conference road game at the University of Detroit Mercy. Tip time is set for 7 p.m. at the Calihan Hall in Detroit.

The Eagles and Titans face off for the 21st time in the program's history with Detroit holding a 12-8 advantage in the all-time series. Tuesday's meeting will mark the sixth consecutive season in which the schools have squared off on the hardwood. UDM opened the series with nine consecutive victories before EMU rolled off five wins between 1989 and 1999.
