EAGLES OPEN 2011-12 CAMPAIGN AGAINST THE HUSKIES: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team opens the 2011-12 campaign with a non-conference tilt Friday, Nov. 11, at Northeastern University. Tip-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. at the Cabot Center in Boston, Mass.
ALL-TIME IN SEASON LID LIFTERS: The Nov. 11 contest at Northeastern marks the start of Eastern Michigan University's 36th year of women's basketball which began in 1976-77. The Eagles' first-ever collegiate contest since the school began offering scholarships was a 63-53 setback to the University of Michigan, Jan. 11, 1977.
All-time the Eagles are 22-13 in season lid lifters, including winning nine of their last 10 openers dating back to a 82-67 victory over Cornell University, Nov. 16, 2001 at the Convocation Center.
EMU VERSUS THE COLONIAL ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION: Eastern is 1-1 all-time versus the Richmond, Va. based Colonial Athletic Association, having only played against two of the 12 member institutions. The Green and White's lone victory came at UNC Wilmington, when EMU took down the Seahawks, 63-54, in the second round of the 2011 Women's National Invitation Tournament (WNIT) at Trask Coliseum, March 21. Meanwhile, EMU is 0-1 against James Madison, dropping an 80-76 decision at the Caribbean Challenge in Cancun, Mexico, Nov. 27, 2008.
I WOULD WALK 10,000 MILES OR 8,993 TO BE EXACT: Pack your bags and grab some information about frequent flyer programs because the Eagles will earn plenty of mileage over the next month and a half. The team will make stops in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Washington and Michigan. All together the EMU road trips will tally over 8,993 miles during the non-conference season. During the Mid-American Conference season the Eagles will rack up only 2,968 miles of travel during their eight league road contests.
EMU VERSUS THE MAC: This is EMU's 31st season competing in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles hold a 206-274 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in 10 of the last 11 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 26-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-44. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 69 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 18.
DOUBLE VISION: In just 96 games during her brief career, junior Tavelyn James has reached double figures in points on 78 occasions. The Detroit native has scored 20 or more in 35 of those contests. Given her current pace of 17.7 points per game, James is on pace to become the leading scorer in the program's 36-year history.
BEST TEAM IN WASHTENAW COUNTY?: The combined efforts between AnnMarie Gilbert and Suzy Merchant have quietly built Eastern Michigan into one of the most dominant teams in the state of Michigan. Since the 2003-04 campaign, the Eagles have won 154 games, posted five 20+ victory seasons and made five postseason tournament appearances.
EXHIBITION REWIND: EMU proved itself ready to start the 2011-12 season after cruising to a 99-42 win over Madonna University, Nov. 5, at the Convocation Center in the final exhibition game of the year. Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert was able to call on 13 players during the game with 10 breaking into the scoring column.
Senior guard Tavelyn James, fresh off her standout effort for the United States in the Pan American Games, led the Eagles with 32 points while sophomore Olivia Fouty scored 16 points with eight rebounds, and India Hairston tallied 11 points with 12 rebounds.
EMU shot 43.2 percent from the field on 38-of-88 attempts while Madonna made just 25 percent of its shots, connecting on 12-of-48. The Eagles out-rebounded the visitors, 62-30, and also made 10-of-24 threes for 41.7 percent.
ALLOWING 50 OR LESS: Eastern Michigan is 88-0 all time when allowing 50 points or less. Since 2003-04, the Green and White have accomplished the feat 43 times with 21 of those coming against Mid-American Conference foes.
MAGIC NUMBERS: In Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's tenure, when two particular numbers on the scoreboard were achieved it typically has been a sign of an EMU win. When the Eagles have scored at least 70 points, their record is 39-10, including winning their last 17 games, while when they hold opponents under 70 points, their record is 62-21.
Under Gilbert's leadership, Eastern Michigan is 58-11 when leading at the half and 63-3 when holding a lead with five minutes to play in the game.
PUTTING A WRAP ON THE SEASON THAT WAS: It was a magical 2010-11 campaign for the Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team, as the Eagles finished with a 24-13 overall record and an 10-6 mark in Mid-American Conference play. Fourth-year head coach AnnMarie Gilbert guided a veteran squad to numerous single-season records, as well as the program's first two postseason victories in the Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT).
Additionally, the Eagles became the first No. 5 seed to ever play in the championship game. Miami, a No. 4 seed in 1995, Western Michigan (No. 4 in 2003) and Bowling Green (No. 4 in 2004) were previously the highest seeds to ever advance to the title game. Western Michigan, a No. 4 seed in 2003, is the highest seed to ever win the title.
