Vultaggio, Bianca Rossi and Emily Dzik make MAC Freshman Team
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com)– Freshman Angela Vultaggio of the Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team was selected as the 2011 Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, the conference office announced Thursday afternoon, Nov. 3. Vultaggio also joined Bianca Rossi and Emily Dzik as the EMU nominees to the MAC All-Freshman Team.
Vultaggio becomes second player in EMU history to be named Freshman of the Year and the first since Amanda Kulikowski was selected in 1998. The Chesterfield, Mich. native led the Eagles in scoring in 2011 with six goals and one assist for 13 points. Four of her six goals came in MAC contests.
Her biggest goal of the season was a game-winning overtime tally in a 2-1 triumph over Miami University, Oct. 9, at Scicluna Field. Vultaggio was responsible for the first goal in that game as well. She played in all 18 games and started nine times for Head Coach Scott Hall.
Rossi caught fire offensively for the Eagles in the latter part of the season, scoring four goals–all in MAC games–and adding an assist for nine points; good for second on the team. Her first-career goal, Sept. 30, against Kent State University snapped a five-game span in which the Eagles had been kept off the scoreboard. The Mississauga, Ontario native also scored a pair of goals including the game winner in a 5-1 romp over Ball State University, Oct. 21, at Scicluna Field.
She saw action in all 18 games in 2011 and started in nine of those contests.
Dzik proved herself as a versatile defender this season, starting in 17-of-18 games for the Green and White and racking-up a team-leading 1,638 minutes played. Her five points (two goals, one assist) led all EMU backs in scoring
The Troy, Mich. native scored goals against Ball State, Oct. 21, and Butler University, Sept. 2.
Vultaggio, Rossi and Dzik become the 16th, 17th and 18th EMU players to be named to the All-Freshman Team since the Eagles joined the MAC prior to the 1999 campaign.
