EAGLES HOST SPARTANS IN FINAL INVITATIONAL GAME: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team will host the Michigan State University Spartans for the first time ever in the Convocation Center when the two teams square off Sunday, Nov. 27, 2011, in the final of four games for each team as part of the Auto-Owners Invitational hosted by MSU. MSU is 3-0 in invitational play while EMU is 2-1.
EMU enters the game with a 4-1 record after posting a 62-43 win over a visiting Rochester College team Wednesday, Nov. 23. The Eagles have recorded wins over UIC (67-57), UALR (62-51), IUPUI (66-64) and Rochester College (62-43).
Michigan State is 3-2 after recording a 68-55 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 68-55, Nov. 23. MSU has also beatean Texas Southern (76-41) and UALR (69-47).
SUNDAY'S GAME ON ESPNU: The Eastern Michigan-Michigan State game Sunday, Nov. 27, will be televised live by ESPNU. The play-by-play duties will be handled by Jim Barbar and the analyst will be Tim McCormick.
FAST START FOR MURPHY: The Rob Murphy Era of Eastern Michigan University men's basketball opened successfully as the Eagles downed the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames, 68-57, Friday, Nov. 11, in the Convocation Center. The Eagles rallied from six-points down in the second half to record the win. The Eagles are currently 4-1 under Murphy's leadership.
BIG TEN COMES TO TOWN: Michigan State will be the first school from the Big Ten Conference to travel to Ypsilanti since the 1998-99 campaign. The Michigan Wolverines defeated the host Eagles, 86-63, in the Convocation Center dedication game, Dec. 9, 1989.
MSU's last two trips to the EMU campus have been hard-fought battles with EMU claiming victory each time. On Dec. 6, 1975, the then-Hurons held on for an 85-79 victory at venerable Bowen Field House and then followed it up with an 84-80 overtime win Dec. 7, 1987, also at the old barn.
The wait will not be so long for the next Big Ten tilt, as the Boilermakers of Purdue University will make the trek to Ypsi for a game during the 2012-13 campaign.
SIMS FILLS IN NICELY: When junior starter Derek Thompson (Detroit, Mich.-Melvindale-SEMO) could not play in the EMU-Rochester game Wednesday, Nov. 23, Head Coach Rob Murphy called on redshirt sophomore J.R. Sims (Fort Wayne, Ind.-Snider) to replace him in the starting lineup. Sims responded with a team-best 12 points with seven rebounds and one assist in 28 minutes of action. He also made all five free throw attempts.
FIRST ACTION: Freshman point guard Antoine Chandler (Windsor, Ontario, Canada-Herman Secondary) saw his first action of the season Wednesday, Nov. 23, against Rochester College and he responded with two points and three steals in seven minutes.
LAMPLEY NAMED MAC WEST PLAYER OF THE WEEK: EMU senior guard Darrell Lampley (Linden, N.J.-Linden-Lakeland C.C.) was named the Mid-American Conference West Division Player of the Week for Nov. 21, 2011. Lampley led the Eagles in scoring in three games last week, including a career-best 21 in a 62-51 win over Arkansas-Little Rock, Nov. 18. He had 16 in a 66-64 win at IUPUI, Nov. 20, and 15 in a 66-49 loss at Texas Southern. Lampley averaged 33.7 minutes a game in those three outings.
FOR THE 115th TIME: The Eastern Michigan University men's basketball team kicked off its 115th season of competition Friday, Nov. 11, 2011, when the Eagles posted a 68-57 win over the Flames of the University of Illinois-Chicago (UIC) in a 7 p.m. game in the Convocation Center. Eastern played its first season in 1897-98 and split games with Detroit, losing a 2-0 decision before coming back for a 4-0 victory. The Eagles are are 67-48 in season openers.
38th MAC SEASON: The 2011-12 season will also be the 38th for the Eagles in the Mid-American Conference. The first year of MAC play for EMU was 1974-75 when the then-Hurons went 12-14 overall and 4-9 in league play.
EMU has won three Mid-American Conference titles: 1987-88, 1990-91, and 1995-96, and the Green and White captured MAC Tournament crowns in all three of those years in addition to winning the tournament title in 1997-98.
EAGLES SET FOR TWO IN-SEASON TOURNAMENTS: The 2011-12 EMU men's basketball team will have two in-season tournaments during the regular season.
The Eagles will be part of the Spartan Invitational hosted by Michigan State University in November. Eastern opens that invitational at Texas Southern, Nov. 15, will host Arkansas-Little Rock on Nov. 18, play at IUPUI, Nov. 20, before closing out with a Nov. 27 noon home date against Michigan State.
In the other in-season tournament, the Eagles will fly to California, Dec. 29-30, 2011, to play in the Cable Car Classic hosted by Santa Clara University. Eastern is scheduled to play host Santa Clara, Dec. 29, and will then meet either Air Force or Wagner in the winner's or loser's bracket, Dec. 30.
