EAGLES CONTINUE ROAD SWING WITH A TRIP TO NEW YORK: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team stays on the road for a two games road swing through the state of New York, Nov. 25-27. The Eagles' first stop is Friday, Nov. 25, against Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., followed by a Sunday, Nov. 27, tilt versus Canisius College in Buffalo, N.Y. The Eagles are 3-1 on the young season, after capturing a 63-55 victory over the Loyola University, Nov. 20, in Chicago, Ill. Meanwhile, the Big Red are 1-3 on the year after heart-breaking 63-62 setback to the University of New Hampshire at Newman Arena. The Golden Griffins are 1-2 following a nail-biting 45-43 victory over the University of Maryland-Eastern Shores, Nov. 21, in at Princess Anne, Md.
JAMES' MARCH TOWARDS HISTORY: Tavelyn James needs just 71 points to pass Laurie Byrd for the EMU all-time career scoring record. James has 1,829 points, while Byrd notched 1,899 points from 1978-82.
ALL-TIME AGAINST CORNELL: Friday's contest will be the third between the two schools on the hardwood, with EMU holding a 2-0 edge in the all-time series. The Eagles defeated the Big Red, 82-67, in the opening game of the Eagle Classic in Ypsilanti, Nov. 16, 2001. Last year, Paige Redditt poured in 16 points as the Eagles came away with a 66-41 win at the Convocation Center, Nov. 26, 2010.
EMU VERSUS THE IVY LEAGUE: Eastern is 3-0 all-time versus the Princeton, NJ based Ivy League, having only played against two of the eight member institutions. EMU is 1-0 against Columbia and 2-0 versus Cornell.
ALL-TIME VERSUS THE GRIFFS: This is the eighth meeting between the Eagles and the Golden Griffins on the hardwood. The last time the programs played in Buffalo, N.Y. was during the 2004-05 campaign, with EMU capturing a 76-61 victory at the Koessler Athletic Center, Dec. 29.
Last season in Ypsilanti, the Green and White used a tenacious defense and a fast-breaking offense to record a 76-40 win over Canisius, Dec. 11, 2010, at the Convocation Center. The Eagles forced a whopping 37 turnovers, to go along with 28 steals and three blocked shots while holding the visitors to 24.4 percent from the field (11-of-45). EMU guards Tavelyn James and Sydney Huntley led the Eagles with 20 and 11 points, respectively.
ALL-TIME AGAINST THE METRO ATLANTIC ATHLETIC: Eastern is 11-4 all-time versus the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC), having played Canisius College (5-2), Siena College (2-0), Marist College (1-0), Niagara University (3-0) and Saint Peter's College (0-2).
110 IS THE SCHOOL'S RECORD FOR POINTS IN A GAME: EMU's 110 points against Marygrove College, Nov. 14, was the school record for most points in a single game. The previous standard of 108 was originally set against Temple Baptist, Nov. 11, 2007, and against Rochester, Dec. 9, 2009. In addition, the Mustangs' 31 points are tied for the fourth-lowest amount of points allowed by an EMU squad in the 36-year history of the program.
Other records set against Marygrove were: most field goal attempts at the Convocation Center (83); most points scored in a game (110); most points in a half by an Eastern player (James, 32); and most points scored in a half (72).
STOP, THIEF!: In the victory over USCAA foe Marygrove, Nov. 14, EMU racked up 26 steals, which is tied for the third-best effort in team history. Five seasons ago, versus NCCAA member Temple Baptist (11-11-07), the Eagles stole the rock a record 29 times.
PITCHING THE SHUTOUT: Typically a term reserved more for EMU Baseball Head Coach Jay Alexander's team, the Eagles pitched a shutout of their own versus Marygove, Nov. 14. The Mustangs did not pick up their first field goal until 8:55 to go in the stanza to make it 41-2. The 11:05 scoring drought is the longest since EMU held Rochester College without a score for 10 minutes and 54 seconds, Dec. 9, 2009.
A LOOK INSIDE THE SPECIALTY STATS: The Eagles are averaging 41.0 points per game in the paint, 15.0 points off the bench, 29.8 points per game off turnovers, 17.5 second-chance points and 17.5 fast break points per game.
I WOULD WALK 10,000 MILES OR 8,993 TO BE EXACT: Pack your bags and grab some information about frequent flyer programs because the Eagles will earn plenty of mileage over the next month and a half. The team will make stops in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Washington and Michigan. All together the EMU road trips will tally over 8,993 miles during the non-conference season. During the Mid-American Conference season the Eagles will rack up only 2,968 miles of travel during their eight league road contests.
ALLOWING 50 OR LESS: Eastern Michigan is 89-0 all time when allowing 50 points or less. Since 2003-04, the Green and White has accomplished the feat 44 times with 21 of those coming against Mid-American Conference foes.
MAGIC NUMBERS: In Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's tenure, when two particular numbers on the scoreboard are achieved it typically has been a sign of an EMU win. When the Eagles have scored at least 70 points, their record is 41-10, including winning their last 19 games, while when they hold opponents under 70 points, their record is 65-21.
Under Gilbert's leadership, Eastern Michigan is 61-11 when leading at the half and 65-3 when holding a lead with five minutes to play in the game.
EMU AND THE HOME OPENER: The Nov. 14 home opener versus Marygrove marked the 14th season of EMU women's basketball at the Convocation Center. The Eagles are 12-2 all-time in season openers at the Convo, including winning the last 12 home lid lifters dating back to a 79-53 victory over Chicago State University, Nov. 17, 2000. During the winning streak, EMU is winning the home opener by an average of 39 points (EMU 86.9, OPP 48.0).
BEST TEAM IN WASHTENAW COUNTY?: The combined efforts between AnnMarie Gilbert and Suzy Merchant have quietly built Eastern Michigan into one of the most dominant teams in the state of Michigan. Since the 2003-04 campaign, the Eagles have won 156 games, posted five 20+ victory seasons and made five postseason tournament appearances.
ALL-TIME AGAINST NON-DIVISION I COMPETITION: The Marygrove contest marked the second regular season meeting between EMU and Marygrove. The Eagles are 14-2 all-time against non-NCAA Division I foes.
DOUBLE VISION: In 101 games during her career, Tavelyn James has reached double figures in points on 83 occasions. The Detroit native has scored 20 or more in 38 of those contests. Given her current pace of 18.1 points per game, James is on pace to become the leading scorer in the program's 36-year history.
GET THAT SHOT OUTTA HERE: Senior forward Paige Redditt recorded a blocked shot Sunday, Nov. 20, in the win over Loyola. She upped her career total to 94 and currently stands in third place on the EMU all-time list. Redditt needs nine more rejections to pass Stephanie Smiley for second all-time. Smiley tallied 103 rejections for Eastern from 1998-2002.
HOME COURT ADVANTAGE: Eastern Michigan is 1-0 at the Convocation Center this season. The Eagles have won 26 of the last 34 home games dating back to the 2008-09 campaign. Eastern Michigan has racked up a solid home-court advantage inside the friendly confines of the Convocation Center since the doors opened during the 1998-99 campaign. The Green and White has won 69.4 percent of the contests played in the building, racking up a 120-53 all-time mark.
