Detroit, Mich. native earns the honor for the third time in her career
CLEVELAND, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — Eastern Michigan University senior guard Tavelyn James (Detroit, Mich.-Mumford) was named the Mid-American Conference Women's Basketball West Division Player of the Week, the conference office announced today, Nov. 14. It marks the third time she has won the award in her career.
James set the single-game standard for points in a game with 42 in the Eagles' 83-53 victory over Northeastern University, Nov. 11. The Detroit, Mich. native had previously set the EMU single-game record with a pair of 40-point efforts in wins over Buffalo (Feb. 3, 2010) and Toledo (March 2, 2010).
With the prolific total, James became the first Mid-American Conference women's basketball player ever to score 40-or-more points in the first game of a season. Western Michigan University's Carrie Moore (41 vs. Detroit - Nov. 17, 2006) and Casey Rost (40 vs. UMKC - Nov. 26, 2003) each reached the 40-point plateau in their team's third game of the season.
James hit 16-of-24 shots (66.7 percent) from the floor, tying the third-most field goals made in a single game in program history which she set against Rochester, Dec. 9, 2010. She also hit 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and recorded six steals for the Green and White.
EMU returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Monday, Nov. 14, for the first of 12 home games this season. The Green and White hosts Marygrove College in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
The Eagles are looking to remain perfect on the young season after capturing an 83-53 victory at Northeastern University Friday, Nov. 11. Meanwhile, the Mustangs are 3-2 on the year, including an 81-40 victory over Kuyper College, Nov. 12.
