HOME OPENER ON TAP FOR MONDAY EVENING: The Eastern Michigan University women's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of the Convocation Center Monday, Nov. 14, for the first of 12 home games this season. The Green and White hosts Marygrove College in a 7 p.m. non-conference contest.
The Eagles are looking to remain perfect on the young season after capturing an 83-53 victory at Northeastern University Friday, Nov. 11. Meanwhile, the Mustangs are 3-2 on the year, including an 81-40 victory over Kuyper College, Nov. 12.
EMU AND THE HOME OPENER: Monday's, Nov. 14, home opener versus Marygrove marks the 14th season of EMU women's basketball at the Convocation Center. The Eagles are 11-2 all-time in season openers at the Convo, including winning the last 11 home lid lifters dating back to a 79-53 victory over Chicago State University, Nov. 17, 2000. During the winning streak, EMU is winning the home opener by an average of 35 points (EMU 84.8, OPP 49.4).
ALL-TIME AGAINST NON-DIVISION I COMPETITION: The Marygrove contest marks the second regular season meeting between EMU and Marygrove. The Eagles are 13-2 all-time against non-NCAA Division I foes with the last meeting coming also against the Mustangs, Nov. 16, 2009, at the Convocation Center. That afternoon, the Eagles rolled to a 87-45 victory.
JAMES BECOMES FIRST MAC PLAYER TO SCORE 40 POINTS IN A SEASON OPENER: Senior Tavelyn James set the single-game standard for points in a game with 42 in the Eagles' 83-53 victory over Northeastern University, Nov. 11. The Detroit, Mich. native had previously set the EMU single-game record with a pair of 40-point efforts in wins over Buffalo (Feb. 3, 2010) and Toledo (March 2, 2010).
With the prolific total, James became the first Mid-American Conference women's basketball player ever to score 40-or-more points in their team's first game of a season. Western Michigan University's Carrie Moore (41 vs. Detroit - Nov. 17, 2006) and Casey Rost (40 vs. UMKC - Nov. 26, 2003) each reached the 40-point plateau in their team's third game of the season.
James hit 16-of-24 shots (66.7 percent) from the floor, tying the third-most field goals made in a single game in program history which she set against Rochester, Dec. 9, 2010. She also hit 4-of-8 from beyond the arc and recorded six steals for the Green and White.
JAMES' MARCH TOWARDS HISTORY: Tavelyn James needs just 149 points to pass Laurie Byrd for the EMU all-time career scoring record. James has 1,751 points, while Byrd notched 1,899 points from 1978-82.
ALL-TIME IN SEASON LID LIFTERS: The Nov. 11 contest at Northeastern marked the start of Eastern Michigan University's 36th year of women's basketball which began in 1976-77. The Eagles' first-ever collegiate contest since the school began offering scholarships was a 63-53 setback to the University of Michigan, Jan. 11, 1977.
The Eagles are 23-13 all-time in season lid lifters, including winning 10 of their last 11 openers dating back to a 82-67 victory over Cornell University, Nov. 16, 2001, at the Convocation Center.
I WOULD WALK 10,000 MILES OR 8,993 TO BE EXACT: Pack your bags and grab some information about frequent flyer programs because the Eagles will earn plenty of mileage over the next month and a half. The team will make stops in Massachusetts, Wisconsin, Illinois, New York, Washington and Michigan. All together the EMU road trips will tally over 8,993 miles during the non-conference season. During the Mid-American Conference season the Eagles will rack up only 2,968 miles of travel during their eight league road contests.
EMU VERSUS THE MAC: This is EMU's 31st season competing in the Mid-American Conference. The Eagles hold a 206-274 record against conference foes and have posted winning seasons in the MAC in 10 of the last 11 campaigns. EMU has had the most success against Northern Illinois, going 26-9, and the least versus Bowling Green, 14-44. Western Michigan has been the Green and White's most frequent opponent with 69 meetings while Buffalo holds the distinction of the fewest conference games against the Eagles with 18.
DOUBLE VISION: In just 97 games during her brief career, Tavelyn James has reached double figures in points on 80 occasions. The Detroit native has scored 20 or more in 36 of those contests. Given her current pace of 17.9 points per game, James is on pace to become the leading scorer in the program's 36-year history.
GET THAT SHOT OUTTA HERE: Senior forward Paige Redditt recorded two blocked shots Friday, Nov. 11, in the win at Northeastern. She upped her career total to 89 and currently stands in third place on the EMU all-time list. Redditt needs 14 more rejections to pass Stephanie Smiley for second all-time. Smiley tallied 103 rejections for Eastern from 1998-2002.
BEST TEAM IN WASHTENAW COUNTY?: The combined efforts between AnnMarie Gilbert and Suzy Merchant have quietly built Eastern Michigan into one of the most dominant teams in the state of Michigan. Since the 2003-04 campaign, the Eagles have won 154 games, posted five 20+ victory seasons and made five postseason tournament appearances.
EXHIBITION REWIND: EMU proved itself ready to start the 2011-12 season after cruising to a 99-42 win over Madonna University, Nov. 5, at the Convocation Center in the final exhibition game of the year. Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert was able to call on 13 players during the game with 10 breaking into the scoring column.
Senior guard Tavelyn James, fresh off her standout effort for the United States in the Pan American Games, led the Eagles with 32 points while sophomore Olivia Fouty scored 16 points with eight rebounds, and India Hairston tallied 11 points with 12 rebounds.
EMU shot 43.2 percent from the field on 38-of-88 attempts while Madonna made just 25 percent of its shots, connecting on 12-of-48. The Eagles out-rebounded the visitors, 62-30, and also made 10-of-24 threes for 41.7 percent.
ALLOWING 50 OR LESS: Eastern Michigan is 88-0 all time when allowing 50 points or less. Since 2003-04, the Green and White have accomplished the feat 43 times with 21 of those coming against Mid-American Conference foes.
MAGIC NUMBERS: In Head Coach AnnMarie Gilbert's tenure, when two particular numbers on the scoreboard were achieved it typically has been a sign of an EMU win. When the Eagles have scored at least 70 points, their record is 40-10, including winning their last 18 games, while when they hold opponents under 70 points, their record is 63-21.
Under Gilbert's leadership, Eastern Michigan is 59-11 when leading at the half and 64-3 when holding a lead with five minutes to play in the game.
