Eagles Drop 151-149 Heartbreaker in Season Opener

EMU maintains lead into final event of the afternoon

MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) —The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team dropped a heartbreaker in their seasoning opening dual-meet matchup to the Ohio Bobcats this afternoon, Oct. 29, after falling 149-151.
The Eagles (0-1, 0-1 MAC) clung to a 147-136 advantage over the 2011 Mid-American Conference champions into the final event of the day, but the Bobcats (2-0, 2-0 MAC) went 1-2 in the 400 Freestyle Relay to capture valuable points and steal the win this afternoon.
EMU finished first in 10 of today's 16 events, with multiple wins by Sara Ghaffari, Briana Emig and Kelly Hendricks.
Ghaffari shined in her collegiate debut, claiming three victories on the day. She placed first in the 50 and 100 freestyle events and also led the Eagles' 1-2-3 attack in the 100 Butterfly. Teammates Jacquelyn Swartz and Samantha Nameth contributed in that event with second and third place finishes, respectively.
Emig was the leader in both the 1,000 and 500 Freestyle events and also took second in the 200 Free racing to a 1:52.45 finish—a narrow 0.23 seconds behind Ohio's Emma Michaels.
Hendricks swept both the one and three-meter boards, with teammate Danielle Hulvey contributing with a second place performance in the three-meter event.
The Green and White secured a 1-2 finish in the 200 Fly as Jessie Godlewski and Swartz touched the wall at 2:04.59 and 2:05.60, respectively. Godewski would also take third in the 200 Backstroke just ahead of third place finisher, Amanda Kiefer.
In the 200 Breaststroke, freshman Monica Dorszewski led the way with her 2:23.50, first place finish. Lauren Kalinosky took third in the event, completing the distance in 2:25.90. The duo would also go 2-3 the 100 Breaststroke for EMU.
In the afternoon's pivotal 400 Freestyle Relay event, the quartet of Helena Tolic, Nameth, Dorszewski, and Emig would combine for a third place, 3:36.64 time behind Ohio's A and B relays.
The Eagles will return to action on Nov. 5 when they head to Bowling Green, Ohio to take on the Falcons at 1 p.m.
