Eagles Fall to Huskies in 3-1 Setback at Home

Eastern dropped just their fourth MAC match and their second home match of the season

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team's six-match win streak came to a close after falling to the Huskies of Northern Illinois 3-1 (25-23, 21-25, 25-27, 20-25) this evening at the Convocation Center in Ypsilanti, Mich.
The loss drops EMU to 19-7 (7-4 MAC), while the Huskies of NIU improved to 20-5 (9-2 MAC) on the 2011 campaign.
The Green and White were paced by a 21-kill performance from Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) and a double-double from Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) who had 47 assists and 16 digs for the Eagles. Kristen Baker (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) added nine kills in the loss, while Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) and Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville) each added eight kills apiece. Haley Stein (Carleton, Mich.-Monroe St. Mary's Catholic Central) had a match-high 37 digs, while Cassie Sowers (Williamsport, Ohio-Wesfall) had a season-high 15 digs for Eastern.
The Eagles opened up the match by winning a tightly contested first set, 25-23. Iaquaniello led the Green and White with five kills in the opening frame, while Short chipped-in with three kills. Mason racked up 12 assists in the opening set, and teammate Stein started the match with 11 digs in the first frame.
The Huskies return-fired in the second frame with a second set victory, 25-21. Iaquaniello again led the Green and White, adding five more kills to her total. Roback and Baker each ran up three kills in the set, while Mason notched 10 more assists, bringing her total to 22 for the match. Stein was able to pick up 13 digs in the second frame.
Iaquaniello reeled off seven kills in the third set, but the Eagles were unable to take the frame as they fell behind 2-1 after the 27-25 setback. Baker picked up four kills, and Short chipped-in with three of her own. Mason added 15 assists to her total bringing it up to 37 for the match.
EMU had a pair of kills from Katherine Krasowski (Oak Lawn, Ill.-Marist) in the fourth frame, but the Eagles were unable to top NIU as they fell 25-20 in the fourth set. Mason and Roback each added a pair of kills in the frame, while Iaquaniello added four more to her total. Mason tallied 10 more assists while adding seven digs to her total.
Eastern continues their grueling Mid-American Conference schedule Saturday, Oct. 29 when they play host to the Broncos of Western Michigan University. First-serve is set for 7 p.m. at the Convocation Center.
