YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -
The Eastern Michigan volleyball squad continues its 2011 schedule with a pair of Mid-American Conference matches this weekend. Eastern opens up with a 7 p.m. match at the Convocation Center when it takes on the Northern Illinois Huskies Friday, Oct. 28. After the Eagles match with NIU, they continue with another home match against the Western Michigan Broncos with first serve is set for 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 29.

EAGLES SOARING THROUGH THE MAC: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team is streaking mid-way through Mid-American Conference competition. EMU is now 7-3 in the MAC after starting 1-3.

Eastern has not dropped a MAC match since falling at home to the Bobcats of Ohio Saturday, Oct. 1, when they fell, 3-0. Since that match the Eagles have dropped just one set, going 6-0 in MAC matches including four three-set victories over teams from the MAC East Division.

ALL-TIME VERSUS THIS WEEK'S FIELD: The Eagles open up the weeked with a Mid-American Conference match at home against the Northern Illinois Huskies. EMU has struggled in its history with NIU, going 19-25. Eastern is looking to win its second-straight match against Northern Illinois after topping the Huskies earlier this season in a 3-1 decision in DeKalb, Ill.  Eastern is looking to take their 20th match all-time from the Huskies with first-serve at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.

Following its match with the Huskies, the Green and White will continue the back-end of its five-match homestand with the Western Michigan Broncos Saturday, Oct. 29, at 7 p.m. Eastern is just 20-52 all-time against the Broncos. Western has taken the last two matches with the Eagles. EMU's last victory over WMU was in 2010 when the Broncos came to the Convocation Center, Oct. 8. Eastern topped Western in a 3-2 decision.

LAST TIME VERSUS THE HUSKIES: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team picked up its first Mid-American Conference win of the season Saturday, Sept. 24 at Northern Illinois. EMU took the first set, 28-26, and dropped the second by the same score. After the break, Eastern came out to win the final two sets, 25-15 and 25-20.

Rachel Iaquaniello led the Eagles' offense with 18 kills and 13 digs, while Paige Roback had 12 kills and a .370 attack percentage (12-2-27). Erin Short racked up 11 kills and Ashley Mason recorded a double-double with 44 assists and 10 digs. Haley Stein set a season-high with 34 digs. Megan Crawshaw and Kristen Baker led the defense at the net with five total blocks each.

LAST TIME VERSUS THE BRONCOS: The Eastern Michigan University women's volleyball team dropped its opening Mid-American Conference match Friday, Sept. 23, at Read Fieldhouse to host Western Michigan, 3-1. Eastern took the first set, 25-21, but fell in the next three, 18-25, 15-25, and 16-25.

Paige Roback paced the Eagles' offense with a .280 attack percentage (10-3-25) while Rachel Iaquaniello led the Green and White with 11 kills. Megan Crawshaw set a career-high with six kills and Ashley Mason had a team-high 34 assists in the loss. Eastern had five players in double figures in digs as Haley Stein led the way with 18.

QUICKEST TO 1,000: The Huskies' Lauren Wicinski is the reigning Mid-American Conference Player of the Year and has continued her dominance through the 2011 campaign. Wicinski is leading the MAC in kills with 456 and 5.56 per match this season.

Wicinski was recently recognized as the quickest player to reach 1,000 kills in the history of the MAC. She needed just 54 matches to eclipse the 1,000 career kill mark, and did so in the Huskies 3-0 sweep of the Western Michigan Broncos, Oct. 6.

TOP TWO IN THEIR CLASS: Western Michigan's Lena Oliver is the only athlete within the Mid-American Conference to have more digs than the Eagles' Haley Stein.

Oliver has picked up 488 digs this season, just four more than Stein. Oliver is averaging 5.74 digs per set, while Stein is averaging 5.38 per set. Eastern's and Western's liberos are the only two athletes in the MAC to total 400 or more digs and are also the only two to average five or more digs per set this season.

CLAWING TO CLAIM CAREER RECORD: Libero Haley Stein has continued to build on her successful junior campaign. The senior is leading the Eagles with 484 digs on the season.

Stein has been successful in the Mid-American Conference, ranking first in MAC matches for digs with 5.66 per set. Catie Fredrich (5.34) and Lena Oliver (5.00) are second  and third in the conference behind Stein.

Stein also has a chance at setting a career record in digs. At second on the career digs list with 1,997, she is trailing EMU's all-time digs leader Ashley Cudney (2,198).

Stein set a single-season record for digs in 2010 by picking up 757. She was also named to the All-MAC First Team in last season's campaign after leading the MAC in digs. Stein ranked fifth nationally in digs per set with 5.73. She was also second nationally with her 757 digs. Stein also set a school record for digs in a match when she had 55, Oct. 8, against Western Michigan.

HITTING HER WAY TO HISTORY: The Eagles' junior outside hitter Rachel Iaquaniello is second in the Mid-American Conference with 3.93 kills per set this season. Iaquaniello is trailing only Lauren Wicinski in the MAC who averages 5.56 for Northern Illinois.

Iaquaniello holds a .212 attack percentage after accumulating 28.1 percent of the Eagles'  total attacks through the 2011 campaign.  Iaquaniello has 994 total attacks this season which is almost 400 more than anyone else on the EMU squad. Paige Roback is second with 598.

The junior is moving up the Eastern Michigan career kill ranks as she sits at seventh overall in EMU history with 1,273 kills, good for fifth all-time. Roxanne Munch sits on the top of that list with 1,537 kills in her career. Iaquaniello is sitting at third overall in career attack attempts with 3,711, with Jennifer Nighswander leading that category with 4,456.

Defensively, Iaquaniello is second in digs for Eastern. She averages 2.76 digs per set.

STREAKING DEFENSE: The Eastern Michigan defense has been stellar through its recent six-match win streak. Eastern has held opponents to just a .128 hitting percentage through the six matches. Teams are averaging just 11.63 kills per set through the win-streak as the Eagles look to continue their strong defensive play as two teams tied for second in the MAC West travel to Ypsilanti this weekend.

MASON'S MOVIN' UP: In her fourth year setting for the Eagles, Ashley Mason is sitting at second all-time in career assists with 4,585 as an Eagle. She trails just Kate Sulewski (5,474).  Mason has continued to showcase her skills at the setter position by picking up 921 assists to this point in the 2011 campaign. Her 10.38 assists per set in Mid-American Conference matches ranks sixth in the MAC. Atop the conference in assists per match is Kristin Hoffman of Northern Illinois with 12.67.

Defensively, Mason is third on the Eagles roster in digs this season as she has racked up 242 through the first 25 matches of the year. She has moved into eighth place in the Eastern Michigan career digs list with 1,204.

Mason is also sitting at second on the most sets played by an Eagle all-time with 476. She trails just Jennifer Swartz (486).

TOP DOGS COMING IN: The Northern Illinois Huskies are leading the Mid-American Conference in attack percentage this season, hitting .282. The next closest in that category is the Falcons of Bowling Green State University (.251).

As a team, Eastern is sitting at seventh in the MAC in hitting percentage at a .203 attack clip throughout this point in the season.

The Huskies and Broncos are the top two teams in the MAC for kills in 2011. Northern Illinois leads the category, averaging 15.18 (1st in the NCAA) kills per set and Western Michigan is averaging 14.74 (5th in the NCAA).

Eastern is ranked sixth in that category as they average 13. 24 kills per set on the season.

BERRINGTON CHASING MILESTONES: Eastern Michigan Head Coach Kim Berrington picked up her 350th career victory as a head volleyball coach including her tenure with the Concordia Cardinals prior to joining the Eagles program.

Although Berrington is already the winningest coach in EMU volleyball history, she is closing in on her 250th win at the helm of the EMU squad. She is sitting at 249 wins with Eastern and looks to pick up her 250th win through the 2011 campaign.
