Eagles two points out of final playoff spot headed into final game

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)–
The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team will take a final shot at clinching a berth in the Mid-American Conference tournament Thursday, Oct. 27, against defending MAC champion Central Michigan University at Scicluna Field. Action will begin at 3 p.m. as the Eagles and Chippewas battle in the final game of the 2011 regular season.

BLOOD PRESSURE: The Eagles (3-12-2; 3-6-1 MAC) and Chippewas (13-2-3; 7-1-2 MAC) will meet for the 15th time Thursday afternoon, with the Eagles holding a commanding 9-3-2 series advantage. However, the Chippewas won the last meeting between the two squads, 3-0, Oct. 28, 2010.

EMU is 3-2 in its last five games with wins against Miami, Northern Illinois and Ball State. CMU is 4-1 in that same time frame which included a 1-0 win over MAC West Division leader Toledo.

SCENARIOS: The Eagles enter their final game with a 3-12-2 record overall and a 3-6-1 mark in the MAC, which is good for 10 points and a 10th-place conference seed. EMU is one point behind Akron for ninth place and two in back of Miami for the eighth and final playoff spot.

In order to leap past Akron and Miami, the Eagles must win against CMU, Akron must either tie or lose its game with Ohio, and Miami must tie or lose to Bowling Green. If Miami and Bowling Green do indeed tie, both the RedHawks and Eagles would have 13 points. EMU would receive the higher ranking by virtue of their 2-1 win over Miami, Oct. 9.

WAIT, WHAT?: In the event of a tie in the standings between two or more teams, the ties will be broken based on head-to-head competition. If a tie still exists, seeding will then depend upon  point accumulation versus ranked conference teams, then goal differential in conference games, then goals allowed in conference games, then goals scored. Should all of those tiebreakers still not produce a higher seed, the outcome will rely solely on a coin flip.

THAT'S A FACT, MAC: Since joining the Mid-American Conference in 1997, the Eagles have qualified for the conference tournament in every season except the 2006 campaign. EMU is 7-13 all-time in tournament play with one MAC title in the 1999 season.

EAGLES AND CHIPS PREVIEW: Thursday's game carries playoff implications for both EMU and CMU. The Eagles need a win to have a chance at making the tournament and the Chippewas need a victory to have a chance to overtake Toledo for the No. 1 seed headed into the MAC Tournament.

Eastern Michigan's keys to victory include keeping steady pressure on a stingy CMU defense which has allowed just seven goals all season. The Green and White will also need to keep a Chippewas team in check which features a very balanced team attack.

Central Michigan's leading scorer, Ashley Mejilla, has only 11 points (four goals, three assists), but four other Chippewas have tallied three goals and two others have scored a pair.

CRASH INTO THE WEEKEND: In the final weekend of the regular season, the Eagles posted a 1-1 record with a 5-1 drubbing of Ball State Friday, Oct. 21, before falling to Toledo, 2-1, Sunday, Oct. 23.

The Eagles got a pair of goals from Bianca Rossi and Stephanie Clarke added her first of the year. In addition to Rossi and Clarke's goals, Emily Dzik connected for her second of the season off a Clarke corner kick. The goal was good for the first converted off a corner this season.

Angela Vultaggio also hit for her fifth goal on assists by Cara Cutaia and Chelsea Detrick. Both Rossi and Clarke notched four-point games and Maggie Manville stopped eight-of-nine shots she faced.

On Sunday, a furious second-half offensive charge came up a goal short in a hard-fought 2-1 loss to the MAC-leading University of Toledo Sunday afternoon, Oct. 23, at Scicluna Field. EMU fell behind, 2-0, in the early stages of the final half, but pushed through for a goal in the 81st minute from Angela Vultaggio before ultimately running out of time to find the equalizer.

DETRICK AMONG EMU'S BEST: Chelsea Detrick's assist Sunday against Toledo marked the 50th point of her stellar career and moved past Brandy Jones and Courtney Sindelar  (49 points each) for sole possession of sixth place on the EMU all-time points list.

Detrick also became a member of the 20-career goals club when she reached the milestone in the 5-1 win against Ball State, Oct. 21. Jessica Hupe (49), Amanda Kulikowski (35), Katie Lewis (24) and Ashley Rodrigues (21) are the only other Eagles who have scored 20 or more goals in a career.

TRIPS AND PAIRS: Freshmen Angela Vultaggio and Bianca Rossi are currently first and second, respectively, on the EMU soccer team in scoring. Vultaggio has scored six times, while Rossi has tallied four goals.

They are also the only members of the squad who have recorded multi-goal games this season. Vultaggio netted a pair in a 2-1 overtime win against the RedHawks, Oct. 9. Rossi's two-goal game came Oct. 21 in a 5-1 rout of Ball State.

In the history of EMU soccer which dates back to 1995, the most goals scored in a game stands at three. Five Eagles have scored a hat trick in a game, most recently  Carissa Wilson in a 5-0 win over Loyola, Sept. 13, 2009.

MAC TOURNAMENT SCHEDULE: The 2011 Mid-American Conference Tournament gets underway Sunday, Oct. 30, with first round games at the home sites of teams ranked one through four.

The winner of those games will move on to the semifinal round which will be played Friday, Nov. 4. A final game to decide the 2011 champion will be held Sunday, Nov. 6.

The MAC Champion will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament which begins Nov. 11.
