Shannon Warner and Sarah Johnson finish tied for third at the weather-shortened event
UNIVERSITY, Park, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team won a weather-shortened Nittany Lion Invitational here at the par 72, 6,229-yard Penn State Blue Course , Sept. 30-Oct.2. The tournament's final round was cancelled due to unplayable conditions on the course.
During Saturday's second round the Eagles carded a 297 to surge to the front of the 15-team field, posting a team score of 597 (300-297). Penn State University and Longwood University finished in a tie for second place with a 599 and The College of Charleston came in fourth with a team total of 602 (304-298).
The victory marked the 16th title in the program's 16-year history. It is also the 12th team championship during Head Coach Sandy Wagner's seven-year tenure as head coach. Additionally, the two-day total ranks second best in school-history, and is the lowest since the squad tallied a 591 (298-293) at the Cardinal Classic, Sept. 19-20, 2009.
EMU finished with three players in the tournament's top 15, including senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) and junior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) finishing tied for third place at 148. Warner recorded back-to-back rounds of 74, while Johnson fired a 77 and a 71.
Warner's 148 was her lowest career 36-hole score, bettering a 166 while playing for Michigan State University in 2008-09. Meanwhile, Johnson's two-round total is tied for her lowest 36-hole career mark. Overall the third place finish was Johnson's third top five finish in 22 career events.
Junior Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa- Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) finished in a tie for 11th with a 150 (77-73). Junior Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) and sophomore Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) finished tied for 22nd and 27th place, respectively.
Longwood's Ariel Witmer took the individual title with an even-par 144 (71-73).
