Eagles looking for big home wins against Ball State and Toledo

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)– The Eastern Michigan University women's soccer team begins the final leg of the 2011 regular season with a pair of home matches against Mid-American Conference West Division opponents. EMU takes on Ball State University Friday, Oct. 21, at 3 p.m. before battling the first place University of Toledo Sunday, Oct. 23, at 1 p.m. at Scicluna Field.
Prior to kickoff Sunday, the team will honor its five graduating seniors Chelsea Detrick, Julie Kaim, Maggie Manville, and twin sisters Amanda and Katie Marsh.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK: The Eagles own an overall record of 2-11-2 and a 2-5-1 mark in the MAC. They are fifth in the West Division and 10th overall in the conference. In order to qualify for the MAC Tournament, the Green and White must leap into at least eighth place overall. To do that, the team must finish strong in its three remaining games, all of which are at home and against teams currently ranked fourth, fourth and second in the West Division.
Eastern Michigan's quest for the postseason begins Friday, Oct. 21, against the Cardinals (9-5-3; 4-2-2 MAC), which are coming off a 0-1-1 record from last weekend. The Eagles have enjoyed success in their history with BSU, posting a 7-3-2 record through 12 meetings.
Sunday's match with the Rockets (9-5-2; 7-0-1 MAC) marks the 20th meeting between the two squads. Toledo's 10-9-0 series advantage makes it the only MAC opponent against which the Eagles do not have a winning record.
GOLDEN GIRLS: The 2011 version of the Eagles feature five seniors who will be honored in a pregame ceremony before the Sunday, Oct. 23, game with Toldeo.
Captain Julie Kaim is a four-year starter who has been a mainstay on the EMU defense from day one. She has three goals and five assists for 11 career points. Kaim was named to the MAC All-Freshman team in 2008, the All-MAC First Team in 2009, and the All-MAC Second Team in 2010.
Forward Chelsea Detrick has played in all but one game during her career and has notched 20 goals and seven assists for 47 points which is eighth all-time for EMU. Detrick scored 11 goals her freshman year to lead the MAC en route to a MAC All-Freshman Team nomination in 2008.
Amanda Marsh has seen action in 59 games over four seasons and has scored three goals along with a trio of assists for nine points.
Katie Marsh has played 79 of a possible 80 games in her career and has developed into a versatile back for the Eagles. She has two career goals and a pair of assists for six points. In 2009, she garnered second team All-MAC honors and third team All-Region accolades.
Goalkeeper Maggie Manville has played in 55 matches with a career record of 20-22-12. She has a career goals against average of 1.07, good for fifth in EMU history. In 2007, she was an All-MAC Freshman Team nominee and went 5-1-4 in 2009 with a 0.54 goals against average.
“They're a great group of kids who are all very entrenched in school and soccer,” remarked Head Coach Scott Hall.
WE GOT THIS: The Green and White enters the weekend in desperate need of wins. To secure those wins, they will need to beat a pair of teams which rank near the top of the conference in both goals for and goals against.
Ball State enters Friday's game with 11 goals scored (fourth in MAC) against eight allowed (tied for third in MAC) through eight MAC games. The Cardinals lead the league with 309 shots which averages to roughly 18 per game.
Offensively, the Cardinals are led by Jasmine Moses, who is tied for second in the MAC with seven goals. Moses has four game-winning tallies this season which ranks first in the conference. Brigit Reder is also a scoring threat with six goals and two assists so far this year.
BSU goalkeeper Aubrey Buehler comes in with an 8-4-3 record with a 1.05 goals against average.
The Rockets come into Ypsilanti leading the conference in goals scored (16) and fewest goals allowed (4) in MAC games. Overall, UT has found the back of the net 28 times, which is also a conference best.
Toledo features a three-pronged attack with Rachel MacLeod, Kristen Lynn and Nicole Gyurgyik. MacLeod leads the MAC with 19 points (six goals, seven assists), while Lynn (eight goals, two assists) and Gyurgyik (seven goals, four assists) are tied for second with 18 points.
WEEKEND RECAP: The Eagles completed their final two road games of the 2011 campaign with a 1-0 victory at Northern Illinois University, Oct. 14, before falling just short of a third straight win, Oct. 16, at Western Michigan University, 1-0.
EMU rode Chelsea Detrick's first goal of the season to a 1-0 victory Friday against NIU for a second consecutive win.
The game was scoreless until the 38th minute, when Detrick one-timed a pass from Bianca Rossi and past NIU goalkeeper Amy Carr. Goalkeeper Maggie Manville recorded her first shutout of the year and 17th of her career.
In Sunday's match with WMU, the Broncos scored the game's only goal with two minutes remaining in the final overtime. The contest featured limited scoring chances between a pair of teams which are accustomed to tight, low-scoring affairs. Western Michigan's goal was just the third for either team in the previous four meetings between the Eagles and Broncos dating back to the 2009 season.
The Eagles nearly ended the game on an Angela Vultaggio breakaway with a few minutes left in regulation, but the Broncos' goalkeeper was up to the task and made the save.
TWENTY GOAL CLUB: Chelsea Detrick's goal Friday was the 20th of her stellar career and moved her into soul possession of fifth place all-time in goals scored for EMU.
Jessica Hupe (49), Amanda Kulikowski (35), Katie Lewis (24) and Ashley Rodrigues (21) are the only other Eagles who have scored 20 or more goals in a career.
