Women's Golf Surges Back to Win; Johnson Takes Third

CARMEL, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University women's golf team finished Monday's opening round of the Hoosier Fall Invitational trailing the University of Notre Dame by six stokes. However, by the time all the scores had been recorded Tuesday at Crooked Stick Golf Club, the Eagles had rallied to leapfrog the Fighting Irish to capture the tournament title with a a season-best 912 (303-306-303). UND finished just a stoke back at 913 (306-297-310) followed by the No. 45-ranked Illini of the University of Illinois in third with a 918 (314-293-311).

The victory marked the team's second title of the 2011-12 campaign and 17th overall championship in the program's 16-year history. It is also the 13th team championship during Head Coach Sandy Wagner's seven-year tenure as head coach.

Eastern Michigan also won the Nittany Lion Invitational, Oct. 2. The victories sandwiched a third-place finish, Oct. 11, at the Mid-American Conference Preview.

EMU finished with four players in the tournament's top 15, including junior Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) capturing third place with a score of 224 (75-75-74). The finish was Johnson's fourth career top-five finish in 24 all-time events.  Senior Shannon Warner (Livonia, Mich.-Livonia Churchill-Michigan State) added her third top 10 showing of the fall with a two-day total of 227 (73-74-80).

Sophomore Rushda Mallick (Cape Town, South Africa-Glenwood House-Cape Peninsula University of Technology) closed the tournament with a round of even-par 72 for a 228 (79-77-72) in a tie for 11th. Sophomores Alyssa Kwon (Richmond Hill, Ontario, Canada-Richmond Hill) and Corey Crossan (London, Ontario, Canada-Mother Teresa Catholic Secondary School) each managed a 236 (76-83-77) and a 250 (79-80-91), respectively.

Playing as an individual, junior Meredith Fairbairn (Orangeville, Ontario, Canada-Westside Secondary School) came up just shy of here first-career top 10 finish with a 228 (74-74-77) in a tie for 11th place. However, the 54-hole total was still a career-low for the Orangeville, Ontario native.

Coach Wagner's crew closes out the fall portion of the schedule at the Pat Bradley Invitational, Oct. 23-25, in Fort Myers, Fla.
