ROCHESTER HILLS, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team was narrowly edged by Oakland University this afternoon, dropping a 151-149 decision to the Golden Grizzlies.
The Eagles maintained an 11-point advantage heading into the final event, but the Grizzlies placed 1-2 in the 400 freestyle relay to secure the victory. With the loss, the Eagles drop to 0-5 on the season, while OU moves to 4-1.
Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) led the Green and White with three first-place victories on the afternoon. She was first to touch the wall at 2:06.94 in the 200 butterfly, and also clinched the top spot after posting a time of 2:09.04 in the 200 IM. In the 100 Fly, Swartz finished in 57.80, and teammate Samantha Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor) followed in second place with a time of 58.62.
Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow) showcased stellar performances in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, leading the way in both events with first place times of 58.37 and 2:07.18, respectively.
Senior Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown) notched a first place performance in the 200 freestyle after completing the event in 1:53.09, and teammate Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge) was next to finish in 1:53.61 to contribute her second place performance. Kowalski later took second in both the 50 and 100 freestyle, while Emig secured second place finishes in the 1,000 Free and 500 Free events.
In the one-meter dive, Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) tallied 288.15 points to earn first place in the event. Kelly Hendricks (Schaumburg, Ill.-Conant) also picked up a first place finish in the three-meter event, scoring 320.92 points.
The Eagles will return to action Friday, Jan. 14 when they head to Bowling Green, Ohio for a Mid-American Conference dual-meet. The event is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
