BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University women's swimming and diving team won ten of 16 events this evening to help secure a 158-136 victory in its Mid-American Conference matchup against the Falcons of Bowling Green State University today, Jan. 14.
With the win, the Eagles improve to 1-5 overall and 1-3 in the MAC, while BGSU drops to 2-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.
Sophomore Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge) paced the Green and White with four victories on the day. She posted first place finishes in the 200, 500, and 1000 freestyle events, and joined teammates Samantha Nameth (Mentor, Ohio-Mentor), Sarah Kowalski (Muncie, Ind.-Yorktown), and Sarah Maraskine (Midland, Mich.-Dow) to win the 400 freestyle relay event.
Kowalski was the first to touch the wall in the 50 free in a time of 23.81. Later, she would out swim Bowling Green's Emily Bennet in the 100 free in 51.99 to pick up her second win of the evening.
Maraskine highlighted the backstroke events for EMU with a 58.72, first place performance in the 100 back, and she was also runner up in the 200 back after she completed the distance in 2:08.80.
Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) helped her team with a victory in the 200 Individual Medley as well as a second place run in the 200 fly, while senior Chelsea Allard (Walnut Creek, Calif.-Lake Forest (Ill.)) was EMU's top finisher in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke.
On the boards, Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) swept both the one and three-meter dives, recording scores of 314.62 and 302.03, respectively.
EMU will return to action when they host Buffalo on Jan. 22 in Jones Natatorium. The meet is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
