Eagles Ready To Dual Musketeers

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) —The Eastern Michigan University men's and women's swimming and diving team will be hosting Xavier University this Friday, Jan. 27 at Jones Natatorium for a non-conference dual against the Musketeers. The meet is slated for a 5 p.m. start.
ALL-TIME SERIES: This Friday will represent the third meeting between the Eagles and the Musketeers in EMU swimming and diving history. On both the men's and women's sides, the Green and White hold a 2-0 advantage over Xavier, a series that dates back to their inaugural meeting in the 1997-98 season.
SCOUTING THE MUSKETEERS: The women's team heads into Friday with a 1-3 record, while the men's program sits at 1-2. The men are coming off of a first place finish at the Butler Invite, where senior Nathan Green earned three first place finishes individually and helped Xavier to a top finish in the 400 free relay. Michael Zennedjian added wins in the 400 free relay, the 400 IM, and the 200 medley relay. The women's team placed second at the invite, led by freshman Courtney Cox who took first in the 1,650 free in 17:56.45 and the 500 free in 5:13.82. Kari Peglar took first place in 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke, while Mary Poslaski took the 200 breaststroke in 2:27.01.
LAST TIME OUT: The men picked up their 58th consecutive Mid-American Conference dual-meet victory last Saturday, Jan. 22, when they defeated the University at Buffalo, 164-136, at Jones Natatorium. Jacob Hanson (Bloomington, Ill.-Normal Community) swept both the 100 and 200 backstroke events and would later go on to lead EMU's podium sweep of the 400 IM, followed by teammates Michael Swain (Ann Arbor, Mich.-Huron) and Troy Esentan (North Little Rock, Ark.-Central). On the boards, Jeffrey Craig (Kent,Ohio-Field) tallied 321.07 points to place second in the one meter event and took first on the three-meter with a 389.03 point performance. The women fell to Buffalo, 137-161. Briana Emig (Sewickley, Pa.-Ambridge) earned a handful of wins for the Eagles, featuring first place times in the 1,000, 500, and 200 freestyle events. In the 100 breaststroke, Chelsea Allard (Walnut Creek, Calif.-Lake Forest (Ill.)) recorded a runner up, 1:05.96 performance. Jacquelyn Swartz (Centerville, Ohio-Centerville) picked up two wins for the Green and White in the 200 butterfly and the 200 IM. On the boards, Lesley Vizurraga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) placed first in the one meter event, with Kelly Hendricks (Schaumburg, Ill.-Conant) and Christina Nunez-Wood (Denver, Colo.-Bear Creek) rounding out the top three for EMU. On the three-meter, Vizzaraga and Nunez-Wood went 1-2.
PULLING RANK: There are 16 members from the men's squad have posted top-five marks in the Mid-American Conference this season, with nine performances representing the best in the MAC. Leading the way is Jacob Hanson, who currently holds the top time in four events: the 100 and 200 backstroke events (49.30 and 1:46.34) and the 200 and 400 Individual Medleys (1:51.87 and 3:57.24). On the women's side, eight have recorded top-five performances in the MAC, with two owning the top spots in the conference. Briana Emig holds the top time in the 500 freestyle (4:49.75), while Lesley Vizurraga tallied the best score in the one meter dive (314.62). ESENTAN NAMED SWIMMER OF THE WEEK: Junior Troy Esentan was announced as the Mid-American Conference Men's Swimmer of the Week by the conference office on Jan. 26. This is the second such award for Esentan in his career and the third honor for an Eagle this season. Esentan had a record-setting weekend this past Saturday, Jan. 22, when the Green and White hosted the University at Buffalo for a MAC matchup here in Jones Natatorium. He helped the Eagles capture their 58th consecutive MAC dual-meet victory after picking up wins in both the 100 breaststroke and 500 freestyle. His time of 57.24 in the 100 breast marks the top time in the MAC as well as a personal best for Esentan. In the 500 free, he finished the distance in 4:36.76 for the second best conference mark as well as a team and personal season best time. Esentan also went on to take third in the 400 individual medley in 4:04.91 to post the seventh best performance for the MAC in that event.
