Gymnastics Takes Fourth at Redbird Quad

NORMAL, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team came up short Sunday afternoon, finishing fourth at the Redbird Quad with a team score of 188.975. Fellow Mid-American Conference member Central Michigan University finished in first place after notching a score of 193.375, followed by host Illinois State University with a 192.025 and University of Chicago-Illinois posting a 189.975.

With the loss Eastern falls to 1-3 (1-0 MAC). CMU remains undefeated at 7-0 (1-0 MAC), while ISU advances to 5-3 overall and UIC improves to 2-3. The state of Illinois fell to the state of Michigan, 382.350-382.000.

Senior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) had a standout performance finishing ninth on the vault recording a 9.650, and eighth on the balance beam earning a 9.550. She also recorded a 9.375 on the floor exercise.

Sophomore Brittany Cassar (Kings Park, N.Y.-Kings Park) followed right behind Viltz finishing in tenth on the uneven parallel bars with a 9.600 and 11th on the floor posting a 9.650, while earning a 9.475 on the beam for the Green and White.

Sophomore Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.-Methacton) had a good showing for the Eagles finishing eighth on the vault posting a 9.650. Senior Grace Crouch ( Bellbrook, Ohio-Bellbrook) and Freshman Shawna Ciaramella (Hamilton, Ont.-St. Mary CSS) both performed well on the beam recording scores of 9.525 and 9.550, respectively.

Andrea Delagarza led the Chippewas finishing first on the vault and beam earning a 9.775 and 9.850 respectively. She was also the all-around winner compiling a score of 39.075.

The Eagles are back in action at home for the first time this season, Saturday, Jan. 29 for the annual Beauty and the Beast event. The gymnastics meet which begins at 1 p.m. will follow a wrestling meet beginning at noon. The women will take on the Cardinals of Ball State, while the men face Tiffin University and SIU-Edwardsville.
