Gymnastics Opens Season With a Win Over NIU

Eagles vault past Huskies in a 187.800-186.825 win

DEKALB, Ill. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University gymnastics team won its season opener Sunday, Jan. 16, at the NIU Convocation Center in DeKalb Ill., as the Eagles vaulted past the Huskies of Northern Illinois University, 187.800-186.825.
Senior Nikole Viltz (Hawthorn Woods, Ill.-Carmel) led the Eagles finishing first on the vault posting a 9.700 and second in the floor exercise recording a score of 9.675, just behind NIU's Holly Reichard who earned a 9.700. Viltz also received an 8.650 for her performance on the balance beam.
Sophomore Kristina Kurkmilis (Eagleville, Pa.-Methacton) tallied a score of 9.550 on the vault and 8.950 in the floor exercise.
Junior Tracie Tamashiro (Honolulu, Hawaii-Kalani) had a great performance finishing third on the balance beam earning a score of 9.525 while Sophomore Brittany Caesar (Kings Park, N.Y.-Kings Park) also finished third posting a 9.650 on the uneven parallel bars.
NIU's Reichard was the only all-around gymnast for the meet and earned a score of 37.825. She finished first in the floor exercise and on the balance beam with scores of 9.700 and 9.750 respectively and tallied 9.325 and 9.050 on the bars and vault.
Sophomore Camille Cicchini (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.-Royal Palm Beach Community) and junior Kristen Yourick (Albuquerque, N.M.-La Cueva) both had a solid showing on the bars finishing fourth and fifth respectively.
The Eagles are back in action Jan. 23 when they will travel to Normal Ill. for the Redbird Quad to take on host Illinois State University, University of Chicago-Illinois and Central Michigan University. The meet is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
