LEWISBURG, Pa. (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University volleyball team continued its early season dominance with a 3-0 sweep of Iona College (26-24, 26-16, 25-20) here Saturday morning, Sept. 4, at the Bucknell Invitational at Davis Gym. The Eagles improved to 6-0 on the year and are off to their best start since 2003 when the squad opened with seven consecutive victories.
With the victory, the Green and White surpassed its entire 2009 win total. To further demonstrate the Eastern Michigan turnaround, the team has gone beyond the minimum three sets just once this season and is out-hitting the opposition .233 to .086.
Sophomore Rachel Iaquaniello (Plymouth, Mich.-Dearborn Divine Child) and freshman Paige Roback (Maumee, Ohio-Notre Dame Academy) paced the Eagle attack combining for 27 of the team's 48 kills.
Iaquaniello finished with 17 kills and a .467 hitting percentage (17-3-30), while Roback recorded 10 kills and six digs. Also contributing for the Green and White was freshman Erin Short (Orrville, Ohio-Orrville), who picked up six kills and nine digs, and senior Jenn Swartz (Canton, Mich.-Westland John Glenn), who recorded six kills and seven digs. Junior setter Ashley Mason (Eastlake, Ohio-Lake Catholic) tallied 37 assists on the morning.
For Iona, Colleen Genett was the lone Gael to reach double-figures in kills with 10 kills, she also added a dig and a block assists. Allison Nieters led Iona with 19 digs.
The opening set was back-and-fourth with the score knotted on 10 different occasions. EMU took its largest lead of the frame at 21-17 on a put-a-way by Iaquanillo. However, the Gaels would charge back to tie the set at 24-24 on an attack error by Swartz. Head Coach Kim Berrington called and timeout to regroup and following the break the freshmen tandem of Short and Roback powered home kills to give the Eagles the hard-fought 26-24 victory.
Eastern jumped out to a five point advantage out of the gate, 10-5, and would never look back en route to the 25-16 decision.
The finale was much the same as the second with Iona unable to match EMU's offensive firepower. The Green and White led by as many as nine points, 18-9, before IC rallied to pull back within four at 24-20. Short would dash any hopes of a further comeback with her sixth and final kill to seal the 25-20 win.
Eastern Michigan closes out the Bucknell Invitational late this afternoon again Providence. First serve is set for 3 p.m.
