COLUMBUS, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) — The Eastern Michigan University football team saw its season record dip to 0-4 with a 73-20 loss to the No. 2 ranked Ohio State University Buckeyes here Saturday, Sept. 25, afternoon in Ohio Stadium. The Eagles fell behind early, trailing 24-0 after the first quarter and could never catch up in the non-conference loss.
The loss drops EMU to 0-4 while the Buckeyes improve to 4-0 on the season.
For the Eagles sophomore quarterback Alex Gillett (Green Springs, Ohio-Clyde) led the way, completing 13-of-22 passes for 200 yards and two touchdowns. Dwayne Priest (Roanoke, Va.-Fleming-Fork Union Academy) led the Eagles' rushing attack with 24 yards on nine rushes while Gillett gained 23 on 14 carries.
Three EMU receivers turned in outstanding efforts as sophomore wide receiver Kinsman Thomas (Bennettsville, S.C.-Marlboro County) caught three passes for 65 yards and one touchdown, senior tight end Ben Thayer (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Hackett Catholic Central) followed with five receptions for 75 yards and freshman wide receiver Donald Scott (Apopka, Fla.-Apopka) had three grabs for 56 yards and one touchdown reception.
Ohio State was led by quarterback Terrelle Pryor who completed 20-of-26 passes for 224 yards and fourth touchdowns while also catching one pass for a score. He ran seven times for 104 yards and one score.
Ohio State struck early in the game, with Pryor racing 53-yards for a touchdown on the Buckeyes first offensive possession of the game. Place-kicker Devin Barclay added the PAT kick for a 7-0 lead at the 13:04 mark of the first quarter.
The home team would increase that lead to 14-0 on their very next possession when Pryor found Dane Sanzanbacher for a 31-yard touchdown pass with Barclay adding the PAT with 10:55 remaining in the opening quarter.
Ohio State would get the ball right back on a fumble recovery, but the EMU defense came up with a stout defensive effort to limit the Buckeyes to a 42-yard Barclay field goal with 6:41 left in the first for a 24-0 lead.
The Eagles would come back at that point to turn in an impressive 75-yard, nine-play drive to break the shutout on a two-yard touchdown run by Priest with newcomer Sean Graham (Commerce Township-Orchard Lake St. Mary's) adding the PAT kick to make it 24-7 with remaining in the second quarter. Thayer had two big catches during that drive, one for 14 yards and another for 20.
Ohio State would go to a hurry-up offense on their next possession to roll 68 yards on eight plays ending with a nine-yard pass from Pryor to Sanzenbacher for a 31-7 lead with 7:44 left in the first half.
The next Buckeye possession was also successful as Pryor hooked up with Sanzenbacher for a six-yard touchdown strike for a 28-7 Buckeye lead with 4:18 left in the half.
The EMU offense would once again rally for a big score, driving 73 yards on seven plays, culminating with a 13-yard touchdown pass from Gillett to Thomas with 59 seconds left in the half to cut the deficit to 38-14. Thomas had the key play in the drive with a 46-yard reception.
The Buckeyes started the second half with a 57-yard drive for a score with Pryor finding his favorite receiver, Sanzenbacher, for an eight-yard touchdown pass at the 12:34 mark of the third quarter.
The Eagles would not be out-done, however, marching 80 yards on six plays with Gillett finding Scott for a 32-yard touchdown pass to finish the drive with 9:11 left in the third quarter. The PAT kick was blocked, leaving the score, 45-20.
Ohio State then relied on a trick play to score the next touchdown. Pryor pitched to Jordan Hall who then threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Pryor in the left-corner of the end zone for a 52-20 advantage at the 2:57 mark of the third quarter.
The Buckeyes would increase their lead to 59-20 on a 17-yard pass from substitute quarterback Joe Bauserman to Jordan Hall and would add to that advantage with a 67-yard run by Jamaal Berry with 8:39 left and a 15-yard run by Kenny Guiton with 3:26 left to make the final, 73-20.
