Men's Golf Moves Up Two Spots at Golfweek Challenge

BURLINGTON, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) -- Tougher course conditions on Monday, Sept. 20, forced higher scores all around, as only three programs broke par on the second day at the Golfweek Conference Challenge. Following an even-par 288, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf program now stands in 10th place with a 10-over 586 (298-288) and is 33 strokes behind clubhouse leader Iowa.
Iowa, who is hosting the event at the par-72, 7,360-yard Spirit Hollow Golf Course, followed up its blistering 20-under par 268 with a three-under par 285 and holds a commanding leading at 23-under par 553. Campbell fired the best 18 holes on the middle day of the three-day event, as the Camels carded a five-under par 283 and shares second place with a four-under par 572 (289-283). Campbell shares second place with North Carolina State (283-289-572), who carded a one-over par 289.
Rounding out the top five programs in the event, which features 12 top 75 programs from last season, are New Mexico (288-285) and Baylor (285-288). Both programs are currently the last of the 15 teams in the field to be in red figures at three-under par 573.
The Hawkeyes have three of the top six golfers in the tournament, starting with Vince India, who carded a six-under par 66 today and leads the event with an eight-under par 136 (70-66). Nevada's Scott Smith (68-69) and Iowa's Brad Hopfinger (65-72) are tied for second place at seven-under par 137. First round leader Chris Brant of Iowa fell to fifth place at five-under par 139, following an 11-stroke difference from his opening round score (64-75).
EMU senior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) continued to excel, firing a three-under 69 to move into a tie for fifth-place after 36 holes. Freshman Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) also moved inside the top 10 with a second round 67 for a two-day mark of 141 (74-67). Freshman Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) finished with a round of 78 for a 57th place tie. Senior Adam Winwood (Epping, Essex, UK-St. Johns (South Mountain CC) and Nicholas Banfield (Halifax, Nova Scotia-St. Mary's University (South Mountain C.C.) rounded out the lineup with a 154 (79-75) and a 170 (93-77), respectively
The Eagles will return to the Spirit Hollow Golf Course links Tuesday morning for the third and final round of their season opening event. The final round is slated for a shotgun start, with all golfers going off various tees at 8:30 a.m.
