BURLINGTON, Iowa (EMUEagles.com) -- After a three-hour delay due to heavy rains overnight, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished the opening round of the Golfweek Conference Challenge in 12th place with a 10-over 298 on Sunday, Sept. 19.
The Eagles are 10 shots behind New Mexico for fifth place and is just one shot out of 11th place. Host Iowa leads the field by a 15-stroke margin, shooting 20-under 268 at Spirit Hollow Golf Course. The top two individual scores from Sunday's first round belong to the Iowa Hawkeyes. Chris Brant leads teammate Brad Hopfinger by one stroke; Brant shot an eight-under 64, while Hopfinger carded a seven-under 65.
EMU senior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) fired a two-under 70 and is tied for ninth-place after 18 holes. Carbary, who began play on the No. 1 tee, birdied four of the first nine holes and carded a three-under on the back nine.
Seeing his first collegiate action, freshman Jared Dalga (Grand Rapids, Mich.-Forest Hills Central) is tied for 40th with a two-over 74. Fellow freshman Brian Churchill-Smith (Oakville, Ontario, Canada-Oakville Trafalgar) finished with a round of 75 for a 48th place tie. Senior Adam Winwood (Epping, Essex, UK-St. Johns (South Mountain CC) and Nicholas Banfield (Halifax, Nova Scotia-St. Mary's University (South Mountain C.C.) rounded out the lineup with a 79 and a 93, respectively
The second round of Golfweek's Conference Challenge will start with tee times beginning at 10 a.m. EDT Monday. Live scoring will be available on www.golfstat.com.
