Men's Golf Remains in Second Place at MAC Championships

NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will need to rally in a big way Sunday in order to recapture the Mid-American Conference title at the par 72, 7,243 yard Longaberger Golf Club. Kent State University owns a 16-stroke lead over the Eagles after Saturday's third round of the 2010 MAC Championship.
Head coach Bruce Cunningham's squad entered the day in second place, and left the course following Saturday's round in that same position. The Eagles carded a third round 292 for a two-day cumulative score of 876 (294-290-292). Tournament leader Kent State continued its scorching play with a six-under 282 for an 860 (296-282-282) and the 16-stroke advantage heading into Sunday's final 18 holes.
Kent State and Eastern will be joined by the University of Akron in the final five threesomes of Sunday's round. The Zips put on a charge to move from fourth into third place with a 903 (306-302-295). Rounding out the field in order are Miami (308-299-299=906) in fourth, Ohio (309-305-294=908) in fifth, Northern Illinois (311-313-291=915) sixth, Toledo (311-310-297=918) and Bowling Green (320-300-298=918) in a tie for seventh and Ball State (310-306-306=922) ninth.
Individually, KSU's Brett Cairns still holds the lead with a four-under 212 (75-67-70) followed by teammate Mackenzie Hughes in second place at 214 (72-72-70).
All four Eagles are ranked in the top 10, including senior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) who is tied for third place at 216 (74-72-70). Senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) is tied for fifth place with a 219 (71-74-74). Senior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) are tied for seventh with a 221. Rounding out the EMU lineup, junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) fired rounds of 79 for a 231 (79-73-79) in a 28th place tie.
The fourth and final round of the 2010 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Sunday, May 2, at 8 a.m. Following competition, MAC Golfer, Freshman, Coach and Sportsmen of the Year, First and Second Team All-MAC and the All-Tournament team will be announced.
