Men’s Golf Looks to Take Back the MAC Championship Crown

YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) -- The Eastern Michigan University men's golf team will compete at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship Friday through Sunday, April 30-May 2, at Longaberger Golf Club in Nashport, Ohio. The four-day, 72-hole event, will be played at 7,224 yards and to a par-72 for the nine MAC schools which sponsor men's golf – Akron, Ball State, Bowling Green, Eastern Michigan, Kent State, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio and Toledo.
The tournament, which is hosted by Kent State University, will feature 36 holes Friday, 18 holes Saturday and the final 18 holes Sunday. The event is scheduled to begin at 7:45 a.m. each day. The tournament is open to the public and admission is free.
Despite a three-under par 285 in the final round, EMU finished as the runner-up at the 2009 MAC Championship with three-day cumulative score of 1,155 (295-285-290-285). The Golden Flashes led the event wire-to-wire, finishing at 16-under par 1,136 (294-280-271-291) on the par 72, 6,994 yard Brickyard Crossing Golf Course in Indianapolis, Ind.
Nick Carbary finished in fourth place with a one-under 287 (74-72-71-70) while Cam Burke tied for fifth with a 288 (73-72-72-71). For their efforts, the duo earned all-tournament team accolades. Kent State's John Hahn led from wire-to-wire to claim medalist honors with a nine-under par total of 279 (71-68-66-74). Hahn was followed by teammate Brett Cairns (76-68-68-71=283) and Mackenzie Hughes (72-71-69-74=286) in second and third place, respectively.
DID YOU KNOW?: The last time the event was played at Longaberger Golf Club in 2008, the tournament came down to the last shot of the tournament before a winner could be crowned. With Eastern trailing by one shot heading into the final threesome of the tournament, the Eagles' Peter Sauerbrei completed his round with a par on the par four 18th. His Kent State opponent, David Ludlow, then missed a bogey putt and had to settle for a six to give Eastern Michigan the one-stroke victory, 1171-1172.
MEN'S GOLF RANKED 63rd BY GOLFSTAT: The latest Golfstat rankings show the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team ranked 63rd nationally according to publications web site.
The Eagles are the second highest ranked team from the Mid-American Conference, trailing only Kent State University at 54th place. Miami University is ranked 124th, the University of Toledo follows in 127th and the University of Akron comes in 134th. Ball State University (146th), Bowling Green State University (169th), Ohio (176th) and Northern Illinois University (190) round of the MAC's member rankings.
MEN'S GOLF RANKED 57TH BY GOLFWEEK/SAGARIN POLL: The latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings show Eastern Michigan ranked 57th nationally according to publications website. EMU is currently 38-35 versus top 100 schools and 91-39 overall.
