NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – With 36 holes in the books at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team sits in second place with a 584 (294-290). Kent State University leads the way after posting a two-over 578 (296-282) at the par 72, 7,243 yard Longaberger Golf Club.
The Golden Flashes hold a six-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down the tournament's top two slots. EMU is in second place with a score of 584, followed by Miami (607), Akron (608), Ohio (614), Ball State (616), Bowling Green (620), Toledo (621) and Northern Illinois (624).
With a second round 67,Brett Cairns helped the Golden Flashes erase a two-stroke first round deficit. Individual, Cairns (75-67=142) holds a two shot lead over teammate Mackenzie Hughes. In the two years that the MAC Championship has been held Longaberger's lengthy layout there have been just three sub-70 rounds in the six rounds of play by the field. Cairns, who shot a second round 69 in 2008, now owns two of them.
All five Eagles are ranked in the top 20, included senior Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) who is tied for third place with a one-over par 145 (71-74). Senior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) notched a 146 (74-72) for a fifth place tie. Senior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) and junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) are tied for seventh with a 147. Rounding out the EMU lineup, junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) fired rounds of 79 and 73 for a 17th place tie.
Burke had a memorable afternoon despite the fast greens and windy conditions, as he posted a hole-in-one on the 206-yard, par 3 fifth hole.
The third round of the 2010 MAC Men's Golf Championship will get underway at 8 a.m. Saturday, May 1, with the final round scheduled for Sunday, May 2, at 8 a.m. For live scoring, visit http://www.golfstat.com
