NASHPORT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – Despite firing a final round 296, the Eastern Michigan University men's golf team finished as the runner-up with a three-day cumulative score of 1,172 (294-290-292-296) at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship. Kent State University captured its second consecutive league title, finishing at two-under par 1,160 (296-282-282-290) on the par 72, 7,243 yard Longaberger Golf Club course.
EMU senior Cam Burke (Baden, Ontario-Waterloo Secondary) finished in fourth place with a one-under 287 (74-72-70-71) while classmate Marty Jeppesen (Saline, Mich.-Saline) placed sixth with a 293 (71-74-74-74). For his efforts, Burke earned all-tournament team accolades. The finish was Burke's fifth career top-five showing and his two eagles were tied to the tournament lead. For Jeppesen, the top-10 finish was the sixth of his career.
The Kent State tandem of Brett Cairns and John Hahn tied for medalist honors with a three-under par total of 283. The pair was followed by teammate Mackenzie Hughes (72-72-70-72=286) in third place.
Battling wet, rainy conditions, Kent State shot four-under par through the first 54 holes and followed that up by turning in a two-over par performance in the final round. Akron finished third with a 1,196, as Miami (1,202), Ohio (1,212), Northern Illinois (1,213), Toledo (1,219), Ball State (1,222) and Bowling Green (1,232) rounded out the team scores.
For the tournament, four of the five Eagles ranked in the top 10, including junior Brad Larente (Cambridge, Ontario-Hespeler Secondary) who finished eighth with a 296 (74-73-74-75) and senior Brandon Lemons (Portage, Mich.-Portage Central) who tied for ninth with a 297 (75-72-74-76). Junior Nick Carbary (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Mattawan) rounded out the lineup with a 309 (79-73-79-78) to sit in 32nd place.
