ON TAP FOR EMU: Eastern Michigan is in the midst of 10 straight road games that will continue this week with doubleheaders against Oakland and Miami and conclude with a pair of single games Saturday and Sunday, April 10-11, at Ball State. EMU is 11-15 overall with a 3-1 record in the Mid-American Conference.
ABOUT THE GOLDEN GRIZZLIES: Oakland University has won two straight and four of its last six games overall. They sport a 13-21 overall record including a 5-4 mark in Horizon League play. OU pitcher Marisa Everitt was just named Pitcher of the Week for registering a 2-0 record with a 1.27 ERA against IUPUI over the weekend and a 0.98 ERA for the week. EMU boasts a 10-2 record against the Grizzlies all-time, but Oakland claimed a win in the most recent meeting back in 2008.
SCOUTING THE REDHAWKS: Miami has won three of its last four and six of its last nine games overall. The RedHawks are 14-15 with a 1-1 MAC record after splitting their opening series with Ball State. Daniela Torres leads the team with a .361 batting average and 13 extra-base hits including three home runs 13 RBI. Jessica Simpson is 10-8 in the circle with a 1.33 ERA and five complete game shutouts. The Eagles are 41-29 all-time against Miami, having split both series in each of the past two years.
A LOOK AT THE CARDINALS: Ball State University is 21-7 on the season and 1-1 in conference play. The Cardinals have been receiving ranking votes for a few weeks now in the ESPN.com/USA Softball poll, ranking 37th last week. They knocked off No. 3 Missouri back on March 19, and have since gone on to win five of its last seven games. The Cardinals hold a 49-34 edge all-time over the Eagles with four straight wins dating back to 2008.
WEEK IN REVIEW: After a 9-2 road setback at Michigan State March 30, the Eagles rebounded to sweep a doubleheader against Detroit in their home opener by scores of 10-2 and 8-0. They hit five home runs on the day including Katy Blaharski lead-off shot in game one, her first career and lifetime home run. Sarah Gerber also added her first career long ball while Jenny and Allison Scherer went back-to-back in game two. It was the first time in EMU history that two sisters had accomplished the feat. The Eagles concluded the week going 3-1 to open Mid-American Conference play by splitting a doubleheader with Toledo April 2, before sweeping a two-game set with Bowling Green April 3-4.
OFFENSE COMES TO LIFE: The Eagles entered last week ranked 11th in the league in team batting average at .214 and finished the week having climbed five spots. A team average of .343 helped raise EMU's overall clip to .253, just two points behind Ohio, which ranks fourth in the MAC. Central Michigan leads the league with a .292 average. The Eagles hit seven home runs in seven games last week, three of which came off the bat of senior Jenny Scherer. Allison Scherer hit .500 (10-for-20) while Stacie Skodinski went .480 (12-for-25) at the dish. Five Eagles in all hit over .300 while four were over the .400 mark.
MELCHERT DOWNS FALCONS: Jamie Melchert single-handedly tamed Bowling Green State University April 3-4, pitching all 14 innings in a pair of complete game wins. She snapped a six-game losing skid entering the weekend and came out with two impressive wins for the Green and White. The junior transfer struck out a season-high nine batters in a two-hitter Saturday and followed it up with six punch outs Sunday.
OFF TO FAST MAC START: Eastern Michigan is off to its best Mid-American Conference start in three years after going 3-1 in the opening weekend. The last time the Eagles started out this strong was back in 2007. That year, the Green and White lost its MAC opener to Northern Illinois before rattling off nine straight wins and going on to win the MAC Tournament title.
