Box Scores - Game 1, Game 2
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – A four-run seventh in game one keyed a doubleheader split for the Eastern Michigan University softball team against IPFW in a non-conference, mid-week tilt at Varsity Field Wednesday, April 28. The Eagles came from behind to take game one, 9-7, before Rachel Staschuk tossed a complete game four-hit shutout for the Mastodons in a 4-0 victory in game two.
EMU moves its record to 15-26 overall while IPFW moves to 24-16. Standing out above the rest was IPFW's Kristina Karpun who put on an offensive performance for the books, hitting three home runs in a 4-for-6 effort at the plate while scoring four runs and driving in seven. For the Eagles, Jessica Richards and Jenny Scherer each went 3-for-4 at the plate in game one while Jessica Patterson was the lone Eagle to record a multi-hit game in game two, going 2-for-2.
The Eagles jumped on the board right away in the first inning of game one, scoring twice on three hits and highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Jenny Scherer and an RBI single through the right side by Sarah Gerber.
In the bottom of the second, the Eagles tacked on two more with Jessica Richards' two-run single to right-field. Facing a 4-0 deficit, the Mastodons inched closer with back-to-back, two-out RBI singles from Stacey Swinford and Ava Hall to make the score 4-2. IPFW nearly added to the two-out rally before EMU first baseman Kaylee Tolliver came up with a leaping grab to rob Amber Pierce of extra bases and the Mastodons of yet another run.
IPFW tied it up in the fourth inning on the first of Karpun's three home runs on the day, a two-run shot to left-center-field to make the score 4-4. The Eagles would waste no time getting back in front as Katy Blaharski drove in Patterson all the way from first with her third double of the season to left-center.
In the sixth, Jenna Ignowski, who came in relief of EMU starter Jaclyn Caro, walked the leadoff batter, but got Staschuk to pop out to the catcher Gerber for the first out. Gerber then fired to first for the double play. With the bases empty and two outs, Sara Hopwood singled before Karpun blasted her second homer of the game, another two-run shot that put the Mastodons on top for the first time, 6-5.
EMU would have an answer in the bottom half of the frame as it batted around in posting four runs thanks to consecutive run-scoring hits by Richards, Scherer, Skodinski and Gerber to give the Eagles a 9-6 lead.
IPFW starting pitcher turned reliever, Cronin, after a pair of pitching changes, led off the seventh inning with a solo home run to left-field, her fifth of the season to pull the Mastodons within two runs. Later in the inning, the visitors put the tying runs at first and second with two outs, but Caro, who came back in relief of Ignowski, got Staschuk to ground out to Blaharski at shortstop to end the game. Ignowski (6-7) earned the win in relief while Caro picked up her first save of the season.
In game two, Karpun's bat stayed hot as she belted her 11th home run of the season, a three-run blast to center-field to give the Mastodons an early 3-0 lead in the second inning. They would add another run in the sixth on a well-executed suicide squeeze play by Cassie Wolfe. Meanwhile, IPFW starter Staschuk pitched very effectively in a complete game four-hit shutout, striking out nine while walking none. She improved her record to 6-2 on the season. EMU's Jillian Williamson fell to 3-4 on the year after pitching seven innings, giving up four runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking eight.
The Eagles will be back in action this Friday, April 30, when they travel to Kent, Ohio to take on the MAC East Division leaders, the Kent State Golden Flashes, in a conference doubleheader before heading to Buffalo for another cross-division clash with the Bulls Saturday and Sunday.
