Box Scores - Game 1, Game 2
KENT, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eagles played long ball, hitting four home runs on the day, to earn a doubleheader split, winning game one, 12-6, before dropping game two, 6-5, in a Mid-American Conference cross-divisional matchup against the Kent State University Golden Flashes at the KSU Softball Complex Friday, April 30.
Jenny Scherer and Lauren Delapaz each launched two home runs, one in each game. Scherer finished the day 4-for-5 with four RBI, three runs scored and four walks. Her two home runs gives her 47 for her career and vaults her into the league lead with 11 this season.
With the split, the Eagles move to 16-27 overall, 5-11 in the MAC while Kent State moves to 24-18 (12-4 MAC).
In game one, Scherer wasted no time joining the league's home run leaders, launching her 10th of the year with one on in the top of the first. It gave the Eagles a 2-0 lead. The leaders in the MAC East Division responded in their half of the first by getting a run on a Jessica Carmichael run-scoring single to right, but that would be all.
The Eagles maintained a 2-1 lead into the fourth inning until Kent State put four runs on the board to take its first lead of the game. Despite Four singles and an error led to all four runs being unearned. Leah Archual stole home to add the final tally of the inning, giving KSU a 5-4 advantage.
EMU would not shy away from a middle-inning deficit as it added two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to jump back on top, 9-5. Both runs in the fifth were unearned due to a defensive miscue by the home team, but the Eagles broke out the bats in the sixth to give Jillian Williamson, who relieved Jamie Melchert in the circle, a little breathing room.
A one out home run by Delapaz, her first of the season, ignited the big inning. With two outs, the Eagles strung together three hits as five straight base runners reached in all. Jessica Richards tripled home Katy Blaharski and later scored on a wild pitch. Sarah Gerber then drove in a pair with a two-run single.
Williamson retired all four batters she faced before Melchert returned in the sixth to close out the 12-6 victory. Williamson earned the win to move her overall record to 4-4 on the year. Melchert pitched five and two-thirds innings allowing six runs (1 earned) on eight hits while striking out four and walking just one.
In game two, the Golden Flashes set the tone early with a four-run first inning highlighted by a two-run home run by Mary Holt. Jessica Patterson got the Eagles on the board in the top of the second with an RBI single to score Nellie Coquillard. Delapaz tried to sneak in another run, but was gunned down at home plate for the final out.
KSU would add two more runs in the fifth to increase its lead to 6-1. EMU, behind a pair of two run home runs by Delapaz and Jenny Scherer in the top of the seventh, cut the Kent State lead to 6-5 with two outs. A pitching change brought Danielle Abernathy into the game, needing just one out, and she got Gerber to strike out to end the game.
Markie Pozzuto picked up the win with 5.1 innings of six-hit, one run ball while Abernathy earned the save. Michelle Hletko took the loss after going four and one-third innings, allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out four while walking one.
With the split, the Eagles move to within a game of fourth place in the MAC West behind Western Michigan (11-21, 6-10 MAC) and one game behind the Broncos and Akron Zips (18-28, 6-10 MAC) for the eighth and final playoff spot.
The Eagles have six games remaining in conference play before the final eight teams are decided and will next venture to Buffalo, NY to take on the University at Buffalo Bulls for a pair of single games Saturday, May 1, at 2 p.m. and Sunday, May 2, at 1 p.m. at Nan Harvey Field.
