EMU wound up on the unfortunate end of a CMU doubleheader sweep Saturday, April 24
Box Scores - Game 1, Game 2
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team joined forces with Central Michigan University on a day that was dedicated to raising money in the fight against cancer, but it was the Chippewas who extended their lead in the Mid-American Conference West Division with a doubleheader sweep, 5-3 and 5-1, over the Eagles at Varsity Field Saturday, April 24.
Both teams agreed to play a doubleheader due to the impending weather Sunday and CMU came away with the sweep behind solid pitching and an offensive attack that outscored the Eagles, 12-4. For EMU, it drops to 14-25 overall, 4-10 in MAC play while CMU improves to 24-13, 10-4 MAC.
In game one, both starting pitchers started out slow as each escaped bases loaded jams in the first inning. For Jamie Melchert, three walks led to what looked to be a big inning for the Chippewas, but she induced a 1-2-3 double play to get EMU out of it. CMU starter Kari Seddon saw a big inning flash before her eyes as an error and two singles loaded filled the bags for Eastern, but she recovered to strike out the side and escape unscathed.
The Eagles were the first to get on the board in the third inning with Stacie Skodinski's second home run of the season right-center-field, a two-out solo shot to put EMU up, 1-0. It was followed up by a double to right by Jenny Scherer and a near two-run home run by Sarah Gerber that was caught just a few feet shy of the 220-feet sign in dead center-field.
Central Michigan responded in the top half of the fourth with a run as Molly Coldren scored on a wild pitch with one out. With one runner still on, Melchert got the next two batters to ground out to keep the game in a 1-1 tie.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Eagles had a chance to take the lead when they put runners at second and third when Jenny Scherer at the plate, but Seddon was able to get the senior looking at strike three to end the threat.
CMU's Ashley Gilson sent a single up the middle in the sixth that looked to be enough to score Summer Knoop from second base, but Jenny Scherer came up throwing and was able to gun down the baserunner and effectively end the inning, keeping the score knotted up at 1-apiece and eventually sending it into extra innings.
In the eighth inning, CMU's Amanda Patrick came up with the bases loaded and nobody out. On the first pitch, she showed bunt, pulled it back and then hammered a grand slam home run to right-center-field to give the Chippewas a 5-1 lead before eventually going on to win by a score of 5-3.
In game two, CMU broke up the scoreless tie when Coldren blasted a two-run homer to deep center-field in the top of the third inning. The Eagles would respond in the bottom half of the frame with an RBI double down the left-field line by Jenny Scherer, scoring Lindsey Smith, who was pinch running for McKenna Russ. Later on in the inning, EMU looked to add on, putting runners on second and third with two outs and Kaylee Tolliver at the plate, but CMU starting pitcher Kara Dornbos got the Eagle first baseman to strikeout to end the frame.
The Chippewas plated three more runs in the fourth inning capped by a two-run home run by Gilson to put the visitors up, 5-1. They would go on to win 7-1.
The Eagles will be back in action to host a mid-week non-conference doubleheader against IPFW this Wednesday, April 28, at Varsity Field
