FISHERS, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – With 18 holes in the books at the 2010 Mid-American Conference Championship, the Eastern Michigan University women's golf team sits in fourth place with a 306. Rain started falling midway through the round with intermittent showers continuing throughout the afternoon, as Kent State University leads the way after posting a 297 at the par 72, 6,037 yard Hawthorns Golf and Country Club.

The Golden Flashes hold a four-stroke lead heading into day two, that total includes holding down four of the tournament's top 10 slots. Ball State is in second place with a score of 301, followed by Western Michigan (305), EMU (306), Toledo (307), Akron (310), Ohio (326), Bowling Green (335) and Northern Illinois (338).

Individually, WMU's Elise Swartout was the only golfer to shoot under par in the first round, carding a one-under 71. The Bronco senior opener her round with a birdie on the par-four, 359-yard first hole and shot a two-under 34 on the front nine. After bogeying the 10th hole, she registered pars on her final eight holes.

The Golden Flashes' Martina Gavier and Cardinals' Rachael Pruett are one stroke behind Swartout with even-par 72s. Gavier and Pruett were both consistent throughout as their rounds as each featured just two birdies and two bogeys.

All five Eagles are ranked in the top 30 including freshman Emily Podzielinski (Noblesville, Ind.-Noblesville) and junior Robyn Scott (Auckland, New Zealand-Westlake Girls-Texas Tech Univ.) who each carded rounds of 74 to reside in a tie for fourth place. Junior Darby Peters (Lake Orion, Mich.-Lake Orion) is tied for 18th with a 78. Freshman Sarah Johnson (Wixom, Mich.-Walled Lake Central) notched an 80 for a 26th place tie and junior Stephanie Bevington (Ossosso, Mich.-Owosso) added an 81 to move into a tie for 28th.
