YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team will host a two-game set with Central Michigan University Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, at Varsity Field. Both squads have decided to team up this season to host the event, "Knock Cancer Out of the Park," which will be celebrated Saturday. Read below for more information regarding the event.
The Eagles (14-23, 4-8 MAC) and Chippewas (21-13, 8-4 MAC) will play two single games this weekend with Saturday's first pitch slated for 2 p.m. and Sunday's scheduled for 1 p.m.

ON TAP FOR EMU: The Eagles sit 14-23 overall, 4-8 in the Mid-American Conference, good for fifth in the West Division, and will host division leader, Central Michigan University (21-13, 8-4 MAC), for a two-game weekend series at Varisty Field Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25. After starting out 3-1 in conference play, the Eagles have dropped seven of their last eight league contests. With just 10 conference tilts remaining, a strong push to the finish could make all the difference in EMU earning its first conference tournament bid since 2008.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS: The Central Michigan University Chippewas are 21-13 overall, 8-4 in the Mid-American Conference West Division, which is good for first place. They enter play having won four straight and six of their last eight overall. Last weekend, CMU secured conference sweeps over Akron and Ohio to go perfect on the weekend. Six Chippewas are batting over .300 on the year with Jill Schulz leading the way with a .371 average. Nine of her 39 hits have gone for extra bases with two leaving the park. Molly Coldren is hitting .321 and leads the team with eight home runs and 29 RBI. In the circle, the majority of the starts have been split between Kari Seddon (11-7) and Kara Dornbos (9-3). SEdon leads the team with 104.1 innings pitched with 102 strikeouts. Opponents are hitting just .234 against CMU pitching this year. Their collective team ERA of 2.70 ranks third in the MAC so far this season.
EMU VERSUS CMU: The Eagles and Chippewas will meet for an astounding, 90th time this weekend. The Chippewas lead the all-time series 60-28-1, but the Eagles have been the more fortunate of the sides of late, winning four of the last seven meetings including a series sweep last season in Ypsilanti.
WEEK IN REVIEW: Eastern Michigan hasn't played since Sunday, April 18, when they turned in a, 7-6, comeback victory over Akron at home. Since then, they've used a much-needed break from action to hit the books hard during finals week and put a cap on the winter semester. Looking back at last weekend, the Eagles dropped an unfortunate three out of four games to Ohio and Akron, splitting with the Zips last Sunday afternoon to salvage one game. Jenny Scherer hit .500 (6-for-12) with a home run during the four games while Sarah Gerber turned in a .417-clip (5-for-12). Nellie Coquillard went just 2-for-12, but both hits left the yard, giving her four homers on the year. As a team, the Eagles managed to hit just .282 on the weekend.
“KNOCK CANCER OUT OF THE PARK”: Saturday, April 24, Eastern Michigan softball will proudly support the fight against cancer when it teams up with Central Michigan University at Varsity Field for game one of its two-game set. Following the game April 24, players will participate in a home run derby to raise money for cancer research. Fans can pledge money in a number of ways such as a certain amount per home run, an amount towards all participants' results or by simply giving a flat donation. Any donation, big or small, will go a long way in the fight against cancer. EMU raised over $5,200 last year and is looking to surpass that mark in, this, the second year of the event.
JENNY SCHERER ON A TEAR: Considered EMU's most productive power hitter, Jenny Scherer, a career .315 hitter entering the season, struggled out of the gate despite her home run totals remaining on track. As of late, her average has seen a considerable spike as she is currently riding an eight-game hitting streak, batting .440 (11-for-25) during the stretch with a pair of home runs, giving her nine on the season. Her average, which dipped below .200 as late as March 31, has seen it rise to .259 with 13 games remaining in the regular season. Her career average, as it stands now, is .304 which ranks 10th in the Eagles' all-time list.
COMEBACK KIDS: The Eagles completed an impressive comeback over the Akron Zips last Sunday, April 18, to win 7-6. EMU entered the bottom of the seventh inning with a 6-4 deficit, but quickly loaded the bases with nobody out. After two strikeouts looked to diminish their chances, Jessica Richards walked to bring in a run and a wild pitch plated the tying tally. That brought up McKenna Russ with runners on second and third. The sophomore slapped an opposite field, game-winning base knock to left-field to score Nellie Coquillard and give the Eagles the win. EMU is 5-4 in one run games this year. It was also their first win of the season when trailing after six innings.
