TOLEDO, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team salvaged a doubleheader split in its Mid-American Conference opener with the University of Toledo Rockets, dropping game one by a score of 6-5 before posting a 12-7 victory in game two at Scott Field Friday, April 2.
EMU (9-15, 1-1 MAC) nearly swept the doubleheader after tying the game in the seventh inning of game one, but the Rockets answered with a run in to take the win in walk-off fashion. Five Eagles tallied four-hit games including Stacie Skodinski who went 5-for-8 in the doubleheader. Jillian Williamson picked up her second consecutive victory while Michelle Hletko earned her first save of the season.
In game one, trailing 5-2 with one out in the top of the seventh, the Eagles mounted an impressive comeback as McKenna Russ launched her second home run of the season, a three-run shot over the right-field wall. Jessica Patterson and Jessica Richards each singled to lead off the inning, giving Russ the game-tying opportunity.
In the bottom half of the inning, the comeback effort went for naught as the Rockets (7-22, 1-1 MAC) pushed across the game-winning run. Toledo's Sam Toy reached on a walk and advanced to second and third on a pair of Jamie Melchert wild pitches. Two batters later, Jillian Spink's RBI single gave the home team a game one victory.
Five Eagles notched multi-hit games including Russ, who went 2-for-3. Melchert took the loss after relieving Jaclyn Caro in the second inning. Each pitcher allowed three runs on 11 combined hits while walking just two batters between them.
The seventh inning of game one carried right over into game two as both sides traded leads five times. EMU got on the board first after Jenny Scherer hit her seventh home run of the season, a leadoff shot to left-field in the second inning. The next three innings saw each team trade three-run frames.
Toledo took the lead in the third inning after Toy's RBI single and Spink's two-run base hit. In the fourth, the Eagles responded with three runs thanks to a pair of Toledo fielding miscues and Russ's RBI single to right-field to drive in Richards.
It was Toledo's turn to answer in the fifth when it plated three runners. Six consecutive batters reached base for the Rockets before the first out was recorded. During that stretch, Williamson replaced Jenna Ignowski in the circle for the Eagles and minimized the damage by getting McKenna Smith to hit into a double play with the bases loaded to end the inning.
Momentum carried into the sixth inning for EMU as they scored five runs on six hits before the first out was recorded and chased Toledo starting pitcher, Hannah Rockhold out of the game. Allison Scherer squeezed in Lauren Delapaz with a successful bunt single and the Eagles put six runs on the board to take a 10-6 lead.
Toledo would add one in the sixth before the Eagles tacked on two more in the seventh on Stacie Skodinski's two-run single down the right-field line to provide the final dagger. Skodinski, who recorded five hits on the day including a 3-for-5 effort in game two, now has nine hits in her last 14 at-bats to raise her season average to a team-high .455. The Eagles out-hit the Rockets, 17-8, in game two as Sarah Gerber, Russ, Patterson and Richards each tallied two hits to finish with four on the day.
The Eagles will travel next to Bowling Green to take on the BGSU Falcons in another two-game MAC set. The Eagles and Falcons will play Saturday and Sunday, April 3-4, with first pitches slated for 2 p.m. and 1 p.m., respectively.
