Box Score
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (EMUEagles.com) - Allison Scherer's two-run double broke a fifth inning tie and helped propelled the Eastern Michigan University softball team to a 9-2 win over Bowling Green State University at Meserve Softball Field in Mid-American Conference play Saturday, April 3.
Allison Scherer sent her fifth double of the season into the right center-field gap to score Stacie Skodinski and Jenny Scherer while lifting the Eagles to a 4-2 lead. The sophomore finished 3-for-3 at the plate with two RBI and notched her fifth multi-hit game of the season and fourth in her last five games. A five-run seventh inning broke the game wide open as EMU coasted to a seven-run victory.
Jamie Melchert was solid in the circle for EMU, pitching a complete game to earn her third win of the season and the second in a row for the Eagles, which moved them to 10-15 overall, 2-1 in the MAC. Bowling Green suffered its first conference loss, dropping to 6-11 overall (2-1 MAC). The junior college transfer snapped a five-game losing skid to move to 3-6 on the season. She didn't allow a hit until the fifth inning and only surrendered two in the game.
Despite a hitless spell, the Falcons were the first to get on the board, scoring a first inning run on a fielder's choice groundout. A similar sequence occurred in the third inning as well. Both Falcon runs were a result of lead-off walks. Melchert issued six on the day, but also struck out a season-high nine batters and was able to get out of a couple jams to hold BGSU in check.
Eastern Michigan added a five-run seventh inning on a few Falcon miscues to break open a relatively close game. BGSU finished with five errors on the day while the Eagles turned in an errorless contest, the third of the sort in their last four games.
BGSU's Melissa Bott took the loss, allowing nine runs (2 earned) over six and one-third innings pitched while striking out three and walking eight. EMU's Skodinski and Courtney Nicholson each added two hits. For the freshman, Nicholson, it was her first career multi-hit game. The Eagles out-hit the Falcons 9-2.
The two teams will meet once more tomorrow in a 1 p.m. start at Meserve Softball Field. You can access live stats by going to EMUEagles.com.
