Box Score
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It wasn't easy, but the Eastern Michigan University softball team earned a split against the University of Akron Zips, winning game two in walk-off fashion, 7-6, thanks to McKenna Russ's bases loaded RBI single to left-field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.
The Eagles improve their record to 14-23 overall, 4-8 in the Mid-American Conference while Akron falls to 14-24 overall, 3-7 in the MAC.
Jenny Scherer tied the game in the bottom of the third inning by lacing her ninth home run of the season, a solo shot, over the left-center-field wall. She finished the day 3-for-3 at the plate with two runs scored. The score remained 1-1 an inning later when Nellie Coquillard gave the home team the advantage by ripping her fourth long ball of the year, a towering shot over the left-field wall.
That forced Akron to make a pitching change as Arney came in relief of starting pitcher Reideman, but that wouldn't be the last the Eagles would see of her. The Green and White tacked on another run in the fourth when Kaylee Tolliver reached on Katy Blaharski's fielder's choice, making the score 3-1, Eagles.
The Zips finally got to EMU starting pitcher Jamie Melchert in the sixth inning, but not without the help of a fielding miscue, leading to four of the five runs scored in the frame. Melchert allowed six runs (1 earned) on just five hits over five and two-thirds innings, but was forced to leave with the Eagles behind, 6-3.
In the bottom half of the sixth, EMU answered by closing the gap on Russ's RBI double down the left-field line to score Allison Scherer from second base. After holding the Zips scoreless in the seventh, the Eagles put together a decisive rally of their own.
EMU put its first two batters on base off of Akron's reliever, Birkhimer, before Reideman came back in to try and close it out. The right-hander struggled, however, as she walked Coquillard on four straight pitches to load the bases. Reideman battled back, striking out the next two hitters and setting up a dramatic win to close out game two, but it was just the opposite.
Blaharski coaxed a walk to pull EMU to within a run before Russ singled to deep left-center to bring in the winning run for the Eagles. Ignowski, who retired four of the five batters she faced while striking out two got the win to move to 5-6 on the year. Meanwhile, Reideman, who left with a deficit and returned to the circle with a lead, suffers the loss to fall to 3-7.
The Eagles will host Central Michigan University next Saturday and Sunday, April 24-25, at Varsity Field. Saturday's game is set for 2 p.m. and will be recognized as “Knock Cancer Out of the Park”. The Eagles and Chippewas will team up to raise money to help the fight against cancer. The Eagles raised over $5,200 last year
