EMU fell victim to a classic pitcher's duel that saw Akron take a 1-0 win in game one of a two-game set
Box Score
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – It was a pitcher's duel at Varsity Field Saturday, April 17, as Eastern Michigan University's Jamie Melchert and the University of Akron's Alex Reideman combined for 23 groundouts and 13 strikeouts while taking a shutout into the sixth inning before the Zips pushed a run across in the sixth to win a Mid-American Conference matchup, 1-0.
Reideman struck out a career high seven batters while Melchert narrowly missed her first career shutout. A bases loaded walk with two outs in the sixth inning proved the difference in a speedy contest that took just an hour and 35 minutes to complete.
The Eagles' (13-23, 3-8 MAC) best scoring opportunity of the day came back in the first inning when they put two runners on base thanks to a pair of singles by Stacie Skodinski and Jenny Scherer. Reideman settled down to get Sarah Gerber to end the inning with a groundout to first base.
The last hit the Akron hurler allowed came in the third inning with McKenna Russ's double off the right-field fence. From there, the right-hander retired 11 straight batters before the streak was snapped with a seventh inning error.
With two outs in the sixth, a miscommunication on a wheel play allowed Alex Helfrich to reach first safely, loading the bases for Monica Shorter. Melchert walked her on four straight pitches forcing a run in and breaking the scoreless tie to give Akron (14-23, 3-6 MAC) a 1-0 lead. She would get the next batter to ground out to second base to end the frame, leaving three Zips on base for the second straight inning.
In the Eagles half of the sixth, Reideman retired the side with one of her career high seven strikeouts sandwiched between a pair of groundouts. It led to a string of 11 consecutive batters retired for the junior.
In the seventh, Gerber reached on an error, giving the EMU faithful hope of a possible rally. But Reideman kept the Eagles from reaching a runner past first base and effectively ended the game in the process.
The Eagles and Zips will play once more in a 1 p.m. start tomorrow, April 18, at Varsity Field.
