YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team is gearing up for a full weekend of Mid-American Conference action against Ohio University and the University of Akron at Varsity Field. Ohio will come into town this Friday, April 16, for a doubleheader before the Eagles host Akron in a pair of single games this Saturday and Sunday, April 17-18.
Friday's first pitch in game one is slated for 1 p.m. at Varsity Field.

ON TAP FOR EMU: The Eagles are finally enjoying an extended stay at home as they take on Ohio and Akron this weekend in the midst of a stretch that includes eight consecutive home games. EMU played its first eight Mid-American Conference games on the road and struggled towards the tail-end of the trip, dropping its last four against Miami and Ball State. The Green and White hope the friendly confines of Varsity Field are just that, as they look to make up ground in the MAC West division.
ABOUT THE BOBCATS: Ohio University comes in with an overall record of 9-24, but is 4-2 in the Mid-American Conference after taking a doubleheader sweep from Western Michigan last Friday, April 9, before splitting a pair of single games with Northern Illinois the two days proceeding. Ohio then dropped a non-conference, mid-week doubleheader to Marshall last Tuesday to make it three losses in four games. Shalene Petrich leads all Bobcat hitters with a .349 average (38-for-109). In the circle, 35 starts have been split fairly evenly between Caitlin Colvin, Emily Wethington and Melissa Bonner. Wethington and Bonner share a team-high four wins apiece while Colvin leads the team in ERA at 2.62. The Eagles hold a 48-25 all-time edge against the 'Cats and are looking to exact revenge after Ohio claimed the most recent victory in the series, a 9-0 win back on April 3, 2009.
SCOUTING THE ZIPS: The University of Akron comes in at 13-21 overall, 2-4 in the Mid-American Conference, good for sixth in the MAC East. The Zips enter the weekend having dropped a twinbill to the Dayton Flyers. Previous to that, they split a pair of games with Western Michigan. Alex Feltes is among the league's top hitters with a .435 batting average, leading the Zips with 40 hits. Alissa Birkhimer has supplied the power with four home runs to go with 22 RBI this season. In the circle, Andrea Arney and Heather Bauer have gotten the bulk of the starts this year. Arney leads the team with 96 innings pitched with a 6-11 record and a 3.86 ERA. The Eagles trail the all-time series to Akron, 24-13. In their last meeting April 4-5, 2009, UA swept the doubleheader, 7-4 and 3-2, and have won three of its last four over the Eagles.
WEEK IN REVIEW: Eastern Michigan earned the doubleheader split against Cleveland State Tuesday, April 13, nearly coming from behind, but falling short, 9-7, in game one before taking game two, 5-2. After being down 8-0 and nearly being mercy-ruled in five innings, EMU put together a seven-run rally to get within one before CSU proved to be too much. The Eagles dropped game one despite out-hitting the Vikings 10-9. In game two, Michelle Hletko shined in the circle by tossing a complete game victory to give the Eagles a split. Against Oakland, Katy Blaharski and Jessica Patterson each recorded three hits and EMU battled to earn an extra-inning, 5-3, victory on the road.
SO HOT IN HERRE: EMU freshman Nellie Coquillard broke out the hot bat when she went 4-for-7 in the doubleheader against Cleveland State April 13, driving in six runs and helping the Eagles to a split with the Vikings. Her three-run home run in the sixth inning of game one was her second of the season and brought the Eagles to within a run at 8-7, after being down 8-0 earlier in the contest. She finished the game 3-for-4 and followed it up with a 1-for-3 effort in game two with two RBI. Her six RBI in the two games more than doubled her previous output for the season entering the day.
