Live Stats vs. Cleveland State
YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) - The Eastern Michigan University softball team will return home for the start of a 10-game homestand this week as they take on the Cleveland State University Vikings this Tuesday, April 13. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m. at Varsity Field.
ON TAP FOR EMU: The Eagles finally return home this week for the start of a 10-game homestand after what would have been a 10-game road swing, if not for a doubleheader rainout with Oakland. EMU will kick off its longest home stretch of the season by taking on Cleveland State in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday, April 11. The Ohio University Bobcats will visit for a doubleheader Friday, April 16, prior to a two-game set with the University of Akron Zips Friday and Saturday, April 17-18. The Eagles are 2-0 at home this season after sweeping the University of Detroit-Mercy in a doubleheader March 31.
ABOUT THE VIKINGS: Cleveland State enters Tuesday already with 27 wins on the season to go against just eight losses. The Vikings are 8-1 in Horizon League play and sit atop the conference standings after going 6-0 last week in a pair of three-game series against Detroit and Wright State. The Vikings' leading hitter, Tess Sito, has put up some very crooked number thus far this season. She is currently hitting .495 with 13 home runs and 31 RBI. She is slugging at a .944 clip and has reached base 57 percent of the time. She is also 28-of-34 in stolen base attempts. She's one of five players batting over .300. In the circle it's Amanda Macenko leading the way with a 21-8 record and a 2.39 ERA. She has struck out 208 batters while walking only 41 in 187.2 innings pitched this season. She has 20 complete games including five shutouts. Eastern Michigan holds a, 4-3, edge all-time vs. CSU, but the Vikings claimed victory in their most recent meeting with a, 5-1, win in 2008.
WEEK IN REVIEW: Leading the Mid-American Conference after the opening weekend of league play had the Eagles riding high, but they were soon humbled after road trips to MAC East and MAC West preseason favorites, Miami and Ball State, respectively. Friday, EMU played a doubleheader against Miami and took a 1-0 lead into the later innings, but the RedHawks stormed back to take a, 3-1, win in game one and a convincing, 10-1, win in game two. Saturday, the Eagles took a first inning, 1-0, lead, but then quickly lost it as Ball State took game one, 3-1. In game two Sunday, EMU built up a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning before the Cardinals plated three to take a one run lead and eventually win it. The Green and White has been in nearly every game, holding a lead in four of their last five games overall.
GERBER, BABY: Sophomore Sarah Gerber was rock solid defensively for the Eagles last week, converting on all 27 chances behind the dish. She even turned in a .400 average with the bat, going 4-for-10 on the weekend with two doubles, two RBI and a walk. In EMU's home opener against Detroit-Mercy back on March 31, Gerber hit her first career home run, a solo shot to left in game one.
