YPSILANTI, Mich. (EMUEagles.com)
– A near improbable comeback in game one almost led to a doubleheader sweep for the Eastern Michigan University softball team, but the Eagles settled for a split against the Cleveland State University Vikings in non-conference action at Varsity Field Tuesday, April 13.

Freshman Nellie Coquillard turned in a spectacular day at the plate, going 4-for-8 with five RBI while blasting her second home run of the season. With the split, EMU moves its record to 12-20 overall while Cleveland State's mark now stands at 28-9.

In game one, the Vikings jumped out to an 8-0 lead thanks to three home runs highlighted by a three-run, third inning shot by Jessica Burt. CSU had a chance to close out the game in shutout fashion with two outs in the fifth and Katy Blaharski stepping to the plate. Cleveland State starting pitcher Amanda Macenko induced what appeared to be a game-ending groundout to second base, but a throwing error prolonged the inning and the game.

From there, the Eagles bats finally came to life and EMU scored two runs on a pair of hits following the error. The hot-hitting would continue in the sixth after Jaclyn Caro shut down the Viking offense. EMU put up a five-spot to pull within one after Nellie Coquillard's three-run shot to left-field, her second home run of the season.

The Green and White looked destined to come back, but Cleveland State added an insurance run in the seventh before relief pitcher Tess Sito shut the Eagles down in order to pick up her first save of the season. Coquillard finished the game with three hits and four runs batted in as the Eagles out-hit the Vikings 10-9 in the game. Jessica Richards also chipped in three hits and two runs while Kaylee Tolliver added two hits as well.

In game two, Michelle Hletko got the start and made the most of it. The senior recorded her longest outing of the season and picked up her first win after allowing just two runs on six hits, striking out three and walking just one. After allowing both runs in the third inning, the Eagles answered with a three-run third of their own to key the comeback victory.

A balanced attack and four Cleveland State fielding errors helped the Eagles to victory. Coquillard came up big with two RBI to cap off a 4-for-8, five RBI two-game effort at the plate. It doubled her total run production for the season entering the day and, best of all, helped EMU snap a five-game skid.

Eastern Michigan will have a quick turn around as it travels to Rochester, Mich. for a single game against Oakland University. The Eagles and Grizzlies will start at 4 p.m.
