Box Score
MUNCIE, Ind. (EMUEagles.com) – Another lead, and this time a late one, relinquished by the Eastern Michigan University softball team as it fell to Ball State University, 4-3, in the second game of a two-game Mid-American Conference set at the BSU Softball Complex Sunday, April 11.
The Eagles took a 3-1 lead into the sixth inning before the Cardinals put together a game-winning comeback to take a 4-3 lead of their own, proving to be the difference-maker. EMU's record drops to 11-19 overall, 3-5 in the MAC while BSU improves to 24-9, 4-2 MAC.
Sarah Gerber, Katy Blaharski and Jenny Scherer each recorded 2-for-3 days at the plate as the Eagles notched eight hits as a team, their most in five games.
Eastern Michigan got on the board early, scoring a first inning run on Gerber's RBI single to left-field, scoring Blaharski on the play. It marked the second straight game that the Eagles were able to put up a first inning run and the fourth time in their last five games that they have scored first. Despite the favorable early lead, the Eagles are just 1-3 during that stretch.
The Cardinals tied it up in the bottom half of the first inning, but the Green and White charged back to re-take the lead in the second inning. With one out in the frame, Jenny Scherer crushed her eighth home run of the year and 44th of her career. Three batters later, Blaharski doubled to left and scored Jessica Richards to give starting pitcher Jamie Melchert a 3-1 lead.
From there, the right-hander went to work. After allowing the Cardinals a first inning run, the junior didn't let another batter reach third base until the sixth inning. It was then that BSU mounted its comeback, stringing together three runs on five hits and forcing Interim Head Coach Eric Oakley to make the switch by bringing in Michelle Hletko to get the final two outs.
Melchert tossed five and one-third innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while walking four and striking out seven. She falls to 4-8 on the season. Meanwhile, Ball State's Elizabeth Milian pitched yet another effective outing, allowing three runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking just one. Her team's late offensive outburst allowed her to pick up her 18th win of the season against just two losses.
The Eagles will have a day off before hosting the Cleveland State University Vikings at Varsity Field in a doubleheader Tuesday, April 13. First pitch of game one is slated for 3 p.m. Live stats will be available through EMUEagles.com.
