Box Score

BOCA RATON, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team was upended by in-state opponent Michigan State, 3-0, at the FAU “Miken” Classic in Boca Raton, Fla. Saturday, March 6.

Jamie Melchert started her second straight game for the Eagles (5-7) and pitched effectively aside from a three-run second inning that proved to be the difference in the game. The junior allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out three over six innings of work.

The big second inning rally for the Spartans (4-10) started with back-to-back singles by Bracamonte and Purtzer to start off the inning. Another single and a bases clearing double by Hanson gave MSU a 3-0 lead and did the Eagles in.

Melchert settled down after that, but her counterpart, Kramer, held EMU in check all game long. Kramer went all seven innings, giving up four hits while striking out seven and walking just one.

The Eagles appeared to put together a start to a rally in the sixth when Jessica Richards and McKenna Russ strung together back-to-back singles to lead off the frame, but the next batter, Lauren Delapaz, grounded into a double play to bail out Kramer. She then struck out Stacie Skodinski with a runner on second to end the threat.

The Eagles will play Florida A&M at 4 p.m. this afternoon.
