BAIRD TO MISS FLORIDA TRIP: Head Coach Karen Baird will not be accompanying the Eastern Michigan University softball team as it travels to Fort Myers, Fla. for the FGCU Invitational per doctor's orders during her pregnancy. In her absence, Assistant Coach Eric Oakley, in his fourth season, will fill in as interim head coach.
BUSY SECOND WEEK IN FLORIDA: The Eastern Michigan University softball team will, seemingly, tour the Atlantic coast of Florida this week. EMU will remain in Fort Myers to take on Florida Gulf Coast in a doubleheader March 2, before heading across the state to do battle with Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Wednesday, March 3. On Thursday, March 4, the Eagles will make the short trek south to take on Florida International University in Miami at 4 p.m. before returning to Boca Raton to take part in the FAU “Miken” Classic March 5-7. During the tournament, they are scheduled to face off against top-20-ranked Florida, FAU, Michigan State, Florida A&M and Connecticut.
FGCU SPRING BREAK INVITE RECAP: The Green and White finished up the FGCU Spring Break Invitational with a 3-2 record after defeating Georgia Southern and then Villanova twice. EMU's two losses came in a rain-shortened, 4-0, affair to Minnesota, which got its revenge after EMU beat them down in Florida in 2009, and St. Francis (Pa.) in a 3-1 setback. The Eagles closed out the tournament by winning their final two games Sunday, Feb. 28, both in comeback fashion in an 8-7 thriller over Georgia Southern and another late inning win against Villanova.
COMEBACK KIDS: The Eagles made it interesting in each of their games Sunday, Feb. 28, coming from behind in each one to defeat Georgia Southern, 8-7, and Villanova, 3-2. In the victory over Georgia Southern, EMU fell behind 7-2 in the first two innings, but clawed back to make the score 7-4 after Jenny Scherer's second two-run home run of the game in the third inning. Then with the bases loaded and two outs in the fourth, Jessica Richards emptied them with a bases clearing triple to tie the game. She then put the Eagles in front for good when she reached home plate on a wild pitch. In the second game against Villanova, Richards came to the rescue again, stealing home in the top of the seventh in a tied game to give EMU a 3-2 victory. Jamie Melchert got the win, throwing 6.2 innings in relief.
FITTING THE BILL: Eastern Michigan's career home run leader, Jenny Scherer, lived up to her billing in the first week, clubbing three home runs in five games including two against Georgia Southern. Both home runs were two-run shots and came in her first two at bats of the game. It was her second career multi-homer game. The last time it occurred was in a 12-2 win over Detroit back on April 29, 2009. Both home runs against GSU helped the Eagles come from behind to win by a score of 8-7. The senior finished the game 2-for-2 at the plate with four RBI, a walk and a stolen base. She currently has 39 career home runs.
MELCHERT MAKES MARK: Jamie Melchert has made her mark already in the 2010 season. The junior transfer from Muskegon Community College has made two appearances for the Eagles this season and has recorded a save and a win in each instance, respectively. In the season opener against Villanova Feb. 26, Melchert entered the game with a runner on and nobody out in the fifth inning and ended the game, allowing just two hits while striking out five batters to earn the three inning save. In her second appearance, she relieved Michelle Hletko in the first and threw the final 6.2 innings to record the win in EMU's improbably 8-7 comeback victory.
A PERFECT OPENER: Sophomore catcher Sarah Gerber opened the season with her first career four-hit game when she went 4-for-4 in the Eagles' 13-5 win over Villanova Feb. 26, with a double, three RBI and two runs scored. There were three occasions during Gerber's freshman season in which she recorded three hits in a game, two that she went perfect at the plate in (at Radford 3-21-09; at Detroit 4-29-09).
2010 MARKS 30TH SEASON OF EMU SOFTBALL: The 2010 campaign marks the 30th season of EMU softball. It all began in 1981 under then-Head Coach Ann Johnson. The Eagles went 21-13 in their inaugural season and 48-33 overall in their first two seasons, her only two seasons as head coach. Five other coaches have assumed the position since Johnson, including current Head Coach Karen Baird. Baird led EMU to its only Mid-American Conference West Division title and MAC Tournament Championship in 2007. They represented the conference in the school's first NCAA Regional appearance that same year.
