FORT MYERS, Fla. (EMUEagles.com) – The Eastern Michigan University softball team split its doubleheader with Florida Gulf Coast University, taking game one, 1-0, before dropping game two, 4-1, Tuesday night, March 2. The Eagles moved their record to 4-3 on the year.

In game one, a first inning run stood to the test for the Green and White. Leading off the game was Jessica Richards who singled to left field. The sophomore advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Lauren Delapaz and a pop out to second by Jenny Scherer. Richards then scored on Stacie Skodinski's RBI single to left field.

In the circle, Jenna Ignowski returned to familiar territory tonight. The reigning Miss Softball in the state of Michigan, who was accustomed to throwing shutouts on a regular basis at Niles High School, threw her first complete game shutout as an Eagle.

The freshman managed to escape some trouble in the seventh when FGCU put runners at second and third with one out. Ignowski buckled down and struck out the next two hitters to end the game. She allowed just two hits while striking out six and walking five en route to her second victory of the year.

EMU finished with five hits in a speedy game one that took an hour, 43 minutes to complete.

In game two, EMU put up a first inning run for the third consecutive game after another Skodinski RBI single that drove in Sarah Gerber. The Eagles would hold onto that 1-0 lead until the fourth inning when FGCU strung together two straight hits, a double by Gary followed by a two-run home run by Platt to put the hosts in front by a run.

In the bottom of the sixth, FGCU added two more runs with a pair of RBI singles by Upchurch and Hernandez to equal the final tally.

Jaclyn Caro started the game with two scoreless innings. The junior is coming off an injury that held her out of the fall season and is slowly working her way back into action.

Jamie Melchert threw the final four innings for the Eagles, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out five and walking five. EMU was solid defensively all day as they played both games without committing a single error.

The Green and White will be back in action tomorrow to face Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Fla. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.
